i suspect you may have picked up cornish X's... they're the meat variety. are they much larger than your other chicks of the same age? CX's are bred to grow much faster and larger (and often grow faster than their feathers come in, making them look semi-plucked) and can be susceptible to congestive heart failure (symptom of which include panting). seriously though, if they're CX's, they'll be obviously larger than your other chicks, look up some photos here on the forums, you'll see. i don't wanna be scaring you if it turns out that i'm wrong, but that's just what struck me first with your story... feed stores like TSC do regularly sell CX's, and they're not usually destined to live much longer than a few months typically.
leghorns on the other hand are a laying variety, and don't have the same issues as a meat bird. if your chicks aren't noticeably larger than the others, then i may be totally wrong, and you might want to look up the various poultry respiratory diseases.
