August Hatch-A-Long

On a positive note, my friend has the other 4 chicks and they're doing fantastic! I'll be able to live vicariously through hers! Now I need to figure out what to do with my broody hen as she's still sitting as if nothing happened...
Glad to hear that the rest of the chicks are doing well!!! :love I’m curious to hear what you do with your broody. When Susan’s hatch failed, I feared that breaking her at that stage would be very difficult, but maybe it would actually be easier than if they had only partly completed an incubation cycle???

We have a hurricane coming this way so I'm going to let her do her thing until it passes. If the stress from the storm doesn't break her then I'm probably going to re-home her or give her some eggs. She's already been sitting for a month so I don't really love the idea of her sitting longer even though I'm mad at her. I know she accepts chicks when allowed to hatch them though.

...even though I'm mad at her...
She is staying. I just sort of feel it.

In all seriousness, I’m so terribly sorry about the entire situation. If she hasn’t lost much weight I’d let her sit. My hens don’t do much else anyway this time of year.

Also been thinking about you guys with this storm. How totally scary that it is so close. They’ve come a long way since evacuating all of Houston for Rita that turned anyway, but I always fear the entire cone still. Stay safe, and please keep us updated!

Lol, We'll see, I can barely look at her right now. She's the hen that hops up on my shoulder so I have really mixed feelings but I don't tolerate aggressive behavior in my flock and she killed 3 precious peeps so I just don't know yet...

I'm watching the storm closely, we live a couple miles from the mandatory evacuation area, so every time there is a hurricane I have to monitor to decide whether it's actually safe or not. 3 years ago when we left for Matthew, it was a good choice. We still had a roof when we came home but massive trees were uprooted every where, there was no power for a week in some areas, no running water, and the local cell tower was twisted into a ball where a tornado decended right on top of it. I do feel like this is going to be a false alarm though...I hope...:fl

The chickens are ready though! Lol

Wow, I was wondering what you do with your chickens if you need to evacuate. That’s a creative solution!!! Hope the hurricane stays out at sea.... I have relatives in FL; everyone is really watching this storm. I feel so bad for the Bahamas! Prayers that there is no more loss of life.

I hope your family stays safe in Florida and I really hope this hurricane goes away! The Bahamas were hit pretty hard, the images and videos that have trickled through have been scary and sad.

If it starts to look worse for my area I can toss tarps in the garage and spread some shavings on them and the girls can camp out inside. Right now I'm hoping they can stay in their coop because hurricane clean up is bad enough without turning the garage into a poo den, lol.
