I started saving eggs from my mixed flock today because I just rehomed my young Frizzle/Buff Orpington rooster. He was very young, only 4.5 to 5 months old so it will be interesting to see how many if any, actually make it to hatching but while cracking eggs open tonight I saw at least one egg from my bantam cochin that was definitely fertilized. Fingers crossed! I would love to have one frizzle pullet from him just because I loved that crazy looking rooster so much! He was so sweet!
Has anyone else set eggs and successfully hatched eggs with such a young rooster? All of the hens that are laying are between 1-5 years old so he's the only factor that could go wrong.

I did day 6 candling of my Marans eggs, which are difficult to see through but I'm fairly confident I have 6 infertile eggs and a very early quitter bloodring. I'll candle again around day 10 or so before I toss out the infertile/quitter eggs but thought I would share the images of Marans candling since they can be tough for those new to candling.

I had several eggs that had an air cell develop straight across during incubation so since I went into lockdown a day early and all that is happening is eggs shaking and no cheeps, I went ahead and candled them today to see, I was hoping as they started to draw down I would know which side to place up, and they're drawing down!!! I guessed right on one and wrong on the other, so I'm glad I candled them.

I also wrote BAD on top of two eggs because I was CERTAIN they were dead. I mean obviously not 100% certain, because, I did put them back, but enough that I wrote bad on them so I would watch and watch and not have a disaster on my hands. Well.... last night one of them started shaking. Today I candled, and the clear areas have turned dark and the air cell started to slightly draw down. It looks perfect today.

Just when you think you really know... and then decide to test yourself. At least I didn't open it.

I don't have the shipped egg's in over here yet, but I did put 8 from my NN flock in my incubator on Saturday.

Lol, I love it when my question mark eggs hatch! Sounds like good progress!

I just rehomed my gorgeous sweet splash copper marans Cockerel that has been crowing his face off the last week. pretty sure I want to work with that breed but just not yet.

he went to a friend that is putting him with some Ameraucana and she is giving me some eggs as soon as he starts fertilizing them! He came from the most speckled marans eggs so I’m hoping I could have some gorgeous laying olive egger babies from him!

It's so sad when we have to re-home the ones we like but at least you will be getting an exciting next generation from him! I would love to see what olive eggers that pairing would produce!!

OMG I HAVE A BROODY!

um. It wouldn’t work to give her eggs hatching now or chicks when they do being this early would it? Am I about to incubate more?

Okay so she is def broody she pulled out feathers and she accepted an egg while I was gathering other ones.

Yaaaaaay!!! Finally!!!!
Lol, Well I'm sure there's the rare occasion where they would accept chicks really early but it's typically best practices to wait at least a week before giving them chicks. You might be able to get away with just a few days but I've never tried it that early before. Did she just decide to go broody today?
