August Hatch-A-Long

Too bad about the silkies. The rest are adorable though. The Blue Marans look like 1 chick with 4 legs View attachment 1871281 nice angle!

Lol, off subject...but how do you have a giggle emoji?!

Shipped eggs drive me nuts. Very few of the ones I ordered even developed. I just shipped out my first ever eggs and spent days trying to find a way to do it and prevent some of the problems that came with the ones I received. All 25 I sent did not break but I am still waiting to hear if any hatch.

You're not making me feel very positive about ordering shipped eggs. :lau

I don’t know. I’d think if there was any liquid they would drown regardless, but maybe I’m wrong. And, there’s always a chance they could pip on the “backside” of the egg, which would be difficult to see without handling the eggs. Not being argumentative, just trying to think it through out loud.

I had 5 or 6 chicks hatch sticky. But I also had a number of dis that seemed to drown. Most I’d noted as “sloshy” through incubation, and I’d never experienced that before. The chicks were positioned properly to hatch, so in theory, upright should’ve been better for them given the circumstance. However, none pipped. Was the membrane too rubbery? Thick? Or did they just never try?

Did eggtopsies and the liquid inside was very sticky or gel like. Indications of high humidity. I always do dry incubation, but the new incubator ran 40-50% without any water added and all vents open. My preferred humidity during incubation is 18-37%. I use 3 thermometers and hygrometers in addition to the built-in.

Anyway, My luck was better on big saddles than I’d had before. It’s all a science experiment lol. What works one time, doesn’t always work the next. Bottom line is... shipped eggs are so frustrating!!!

Stats and chick pics to come!d
I like thinking through out loud. And I totally think you’re right. I had a horse with laminitis once that passed away and I was driving myself crazy with research into therapies and then what if’s afterward. My vet sat me down and had a long talk with me about “anecdotal evidence.” He said the only way he could explain laminitis was that the horse is either going to make it or it isn’t, fairly regardless of what we do.

Anyway, I just bring that up because I can’t help myself but think of that statement and discussion with him EVERY time I hatch.

Stats from yesterday’s hatch.

60 shipped eggs from 2 different breeders.

36 “rare” eggs
26 developed
1 early quitter
4-8 weren’t moving or of ideal size or were moving but sloshy at lockdown
15 hatched

24 Silkie (white) eggs
2 developed
1 quit right before hatch
0 hatched :hit

So... I’m a little disappointed neither Ayam Cemani hatched, but we did get a nice selection of breeds and egg colors (c’mon girls! Lol) from the hatch. I’m having trouble deciphering who is who, but they’re all pretty cute. Sorry for so many pics! Any guesses on the ones with question marks?

ADORABLE chicks! That last isbar is probably not. I just hatched one isbar pullet (come on, baby girl!) and lots of orpingtons and I messaged the breeder and she said the isbars have dark feet and the splash have green.

So sweet! I'm sorry none of your Silkies hatched! That's the worst!
#8 looks exactly like my Cream Legbar Pullets but I'm not familiar with a few of the breeds you hatched so there could be others that look like them at hatch.

I quoted the wrong post but I’m just saying i know you’re going to have a great shipped egg hatch. :fl

just locked these babies down.... so many possibilities! Duck turkey and a variety of chicks.... hoping for some Nn but that was not my main goal with this hatch. See those pink eggs? Those are out of my Delaware mix pen. The last 2 I hatched out of there are on track to hit 4.5 or 5 pounds by 12 to 14 weeks!

I just realized How Many eggs are in lockdown and How Many more are in my cabinet incubator..... ummm time to ask for help? If half these hatch I will have over 60 babies! Oh man. What was I thinking?????

You know I was "supposed " to be done hatching end of may....
I was just supposed to do a few hatches for the sake of learning how to hatch, my first hatch was April 1st and I have hatched at least once a month ever since, twice on some months. I just sell or eat chickens to make room for new ones. Its addicting
