August Hatch-A-Long

Very nice egg!

The chick hatched early this morning! It's a bit bitter sweet because while broody is being attentive and accepted the chick it appears there's something wrong with it. The little one isn't very active and when I pick it up it's little head wobbles the hen is still taking crumbles and trying to break it up for the chick and cooing to her. Fingers crossed but with my bad luck lately I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
Can you give it some Nutri-drench?

Poor mama and poor @CluckNDoodle fingers crossed!!!!

I have the Nutridrench on standby and I may try it shortly. I'm not entirely sure what happened but it's not wry neck. It's almost as though it's neck is broken but it hatched successfully and can shove itself around that I've seen but it's not typical mobility. It seems like an hatch injury but not one that I've encountered before. Possibly a birth defect? Though it looks perfect on the outside. I was there right as it hatched and it appeared to push out normally but just didn't recover well and it was early this morning so it's been several hours...I'm not even sure how to learn from this experience...I've never seen anything quite like it but it's not good. :(

Sometimes there’s not much to learn but that crap happens... Still pulling for your chick...

Thank you! At the very least, it was clearly a situation out of my hands. Maybe it's just a pulled muscle! I've never seen it so I may record it tomorrow for future examples to help others encountering this if it passes.

Random updates to August crew... One of our 18 week old pullets laid a gorgeous colored egg!!!! Not sure if it’s the CCL cross who has been looking ready to lay... Also, FINALLY got the New Guinea coop done enough to transfer the 3-8 week old keets into it. I tried to separate the youngest keets from the older but my attempt failed.... :fl And I think that all 16/16 keets hatched but awaiting confirmation from DD as I’m out of town. Whew, it’s been busy!!!!

How’s your chick???:fl

Incredibly... she's doing better! I thought for sure I would be walking out to a dead chick this morning but she's even holding her head up! She's still just shoving herself around so I decided to set the brooder up inside and see if I can give her a better chance because I already saw momma accidentally step on her and I'm kind of hoping since she actually seems a little better that maybe with a day of tender loving care that I may be able to put her back. If not, I'll keep tending to her inside and get another chick for company...which is making me laugh because I didn't get her because I wanted more chicks but because I wanted my broody hen to stop sitting. lol
