August Hatch-A-Long

Wow! Thank you for your sharing your knowledge and experience with me! It's amazing that I haven't encountered slipped tendons prior to this chick. I was quite preoccupied with it's neck initially. I still wish I better understood what caused this to avoid it in the future. I will try again to do the wrap myself as I certainly can't afford $1500 on a chick as much as I would love to give it every possible chance! Chickens have been a "home treatment" pet for me rather than paying for vet visits, and because my husband is a softy like I am (maybe even more so, lol) I have gotten quite efficient at handling chicken first aid but this one is proving so difficult for me that I find myself planning a housing situation for a one legged chicken. Lol
It’s possible your vet can do something for less?

As to cause, there is research that indicates perosis has both a genetic and nutritional component. This link summarizes the nutritional component.

Since this chick is from a rare breed, I’d guess that its genetics are at least part of its issue...

Sorry @CluckNDoodle for the issues, and so appreciative of the knowledge from @Mixed flock enthusiast!

I think one of my held back broilers is egg bound. :-/ I’m going to isolate her and see, it would be her first egg, so she either doesn’t know what the heck is going on, or is probably not a good candidate for being held back if her body couldn’t even get out the first egg. :-(

Egg bound on your first egg - ouch! Maybe it’s a large egg, like a double yolker? Good luck with her!:fl

Ouch! I hope not! Hopefully her reproductive system is just working out the kinks. :fl

Hey @CluckNDoodle could my broody already be laying again? I mean it has to be her. The chicks are like 3 and a half weeks old.

Wow! She's an overachiever! I think the earliest I've had a broody start laying while raising chicks was around 5-6 weeks and it was so cute because the chicks still followed her around so they would sit patiently and wait while she was in the nest box, lol. Is she still raising the babies? Removing the chicks would probably encourage her to lay sooner as well.

Oh absolutely. Today it’s rainy and overcast and gross and they’ve been under her the whole day, little drama babies. They’re SO CUTE yesterday she had them on the perches during the day. She takes them everywhere I get quite nervous they’re actually as a group of the four of them the largest and most active free rangers.

That’s adorable! Susan the silkie is my only one that didn’t run the chicks off when she started laying... I felt bad for the rest of the chicks getting the boot from mom!

I’m really bad news of the day, my New Guinea coop is not snake proof. We lost two juvenile keets last night when a large black rat snake got into their coop! I wish I knew how he got in but I think that the apron was too loose and the door has gaps that may be too big...

Aww! That's too cute! :love
Hopefully she'll wait a couple of weeks before chasing them off even if she is the one laying just because it's so early. Every hen handles that a little differently though.

I don't like seeing them get the boot either but it doesn't seem to last too long. All of the chicks I've kept from broodies have all integrated as part of the flock.

I'm so so sorry about your keets!! :hugs I used long landscape staples to pin the apron down around ours if that helps!
