August Hatch-A-Long!

I am very excited! I checked the eggs I set Wednesday night and 5 have great growth. 1 is iffy and 2 I don't see anything yet. I kept 2 of the shipped eggs that looked the best and still nothing in them. We were all so excited to see the growth--looks like some blue, partridge, and showgirl silkies. Hope they continue to do well. Glad to see everyone's eggs are going okay so far.

Glad to see you are getting some action in those eggs!

Candled my 36 silkies for the first time tonight. I tossed 6 whites, 6 partridge and 1 porcelain. That still leaves me with 12 whites 6 partridge 3 porcelains and 2 paints. The breeder is a friend so I informed her of my findings. Looks like some fuzzy butts are getting trimmed tomorrow. Only 1 was blood ring the other 12 were clear.
But I am very excited. I have another friend who will be sending me some showgirls as soon as I get a coop built!
I sold all my EE's from earlier hatch and 3 of my GL brahmas. They are getting so beautiful!

Its only day 6 but I decided to try candling one egg to see what I could see. The air pocket seemed bigger than I thought it would be this early, and I could see veins coming down from the air pocket, but I couldn't see anything else. It was a lighter colored Marans egg so I guess that isn't unusual. Now I am nervous about candling any more as I was advised to wait till Day 10 or risk killing the eggs... hm. Maybe I will just rearrange them in the bator tomorrow by type and mark them with numbers so I can keep track of what is what and who is who. I will have to candle a couple though as I've promised the boys they could stay up late to see what is inside the eggs.

Yesterdays candle I saw a small shadowy blob seperate from the yolk of the egg I wasn't sure about. I think I saw some veining, but maybe not. Not sure what that is, but the other three have life.
I'm so ashamed of myself... my neighbour came over today with two big eggs for me. They are Isa browns. Guess what I did? I put them in the incubator.
I know I'll have a staggered hatch, but I just couldn't resist...

That is funny about the butts! Glad a good portion are developing. Liz who I got the eggs from said fertility is down when it is so hot so she recommneded taking as many eggs as she had. Not sure how hot it is there, but it is miserable here right now

Evidently it is common with Silkies. Too much fluff and fertility goes down. Can't "complete" the act. It has been hot here, but her pens were in a very cool area. And if all hatch, 24 is plenty for me!

I candle at days 7, 14, and 18. Candling will not kill them. Make sure your hands are very clean. Transfering bacteria from your hands to the eggs is the risk of too much candling. This is how aircells should look.
