August Hatch-A-Long!

3 chicks out, 3 more zipping, last one doing nothing! Beautiful babies! First one had very bad slayed legs(slayed foreward instead of to the side), couldnt even stand, hobbles didnt work, so I hung it in a sling, fed vitamin water through the night. I took it out of sling about 1 hr. ago and it can stand! It is back in sling waiting for bones to harder a bit more, waiting for its hatchmates!

The chick knocked the cover off the waterwell then was falling asleep with head in it.....so I had to quickly lift lid to knock cover back on.....now worried that I have compromised other eggs :( but I couldn't let it drown itself

wellll? then I guess if you see a fluff you'll know!

Thx I am so excited its hatching there is one that has quite a small hole and I can just see its beak and its cheeping away Then there is an other one that is smashed but it is still cheeping and seems happy but the egg has blood on it do you think that's left over blood or do you think that it still needs to absorb it

How far along are they?

They're due to hatch the 17th and were molested on the 12th at day 16.

There are a couple that are super dark, so they might be fine. The lighter ones that I candled didn't look quite right--like everything inside was loose (hard to 'splain!). The eggs I candled from the other broody, the air cells stayed right at the top, nothing much moved around.

I'm mostly sad because I really wanted the Buff Orp and the super dark olive green ones to hatch. Tho, I guess this gives me a perfectly good excuse to hatch some more out.

Probably in the 'bator this time unless one of the hens stays broody.

Crikies--they certainly can find all ways into trouble!

Fingers crossed that the rest hatch out for you!

Mmmmmmm....

I am making some honey spice wine. I only do half honey and half sugar. I prefer the taste and it's cheaper. I boil my spices and let them steep a long time. This is the first time my house has smelled good since starting chickens. With all of the rain and my house smelling of apples, nutmeg, cinnimon and cloves, I almost feel like it's winter. Until I step outside.

I am going to try locking both down early on day 16 as I read to do for shipped eggs. Just can't decide if I should hatch in cartons or laying down... sigh. Maybe I should lay down those with good air cells and leave the wonky ones in the cartons?
There was someone on here awhile back insisting on leaving the eggs standing up. So I am trying that this time. But what if a chick pips thru the center of the air cell? How will it reach the shell? I've had some with loose air cells get all the way up to hatch but die just before. I think the membrane is so loose they can't push thru it like trying to pop a balloon that isn't blown up very much.

Another good reason I use wet sponges and rags instead of a dish of water. I am sure they will be fine, you gotta do what ya gotta do :)
