August Hatch-A-Long!

just found something amazing! was unplugging and then moving my bator so i could clean and make it ready for the next batch and underneath it i found an egg i had lost and thought one my dogs ate and since it had been out of the bator for 3 days give or take i figured that if there was a chick inside it'd be dead after three day of no heat or humidity to help it hatch...but when i made a small hole in the big end(was just gonna see what color chick i might have gotten if it'd hatched) there was a little yellow chick in there that moved, looked at me and gave a pitiful peep. so amazed at this little chicks will to live...put it into a silicone cupcake/muffin mold with a piece of barely moist paper towel and put it back in the bator and added some water and a towel over top to help the heat go back up and keep the humidity in and hope and pray it will live
Wow!

Thank you for the advice about the rags. If none of my shipped egg hatch, I think I will order some baby chicks and wait until they start laying and maybe try to hatch my own. It's very disappointing with the shipped eggs!
I am on Day 23 and 2 hours.

Hmm whats your set up? Interesting!!
...BUT you know it doesnt hurt to open the bator to turn ..
.Brinsea even has a bator out with a cool down setting
They say you get a 3% better hatch letting them cool a little while b/c the thinking is Miss Broody get off to eat and drink each day..
Good luck on your hatch!!!
Will be satisfying to see those chicks and you made the bator yourself to hatch them!!.

My husband deserves all the credit for this, he did an amazing job!!! The idea came from a post right here on BYC "The Gopherbator Egg Incubator", it took him about a 3 evenings after work to complete. We only spent $8.00 for the thermostat....we already had everything else laying around. It took about a week of tweeking and moving the thermostat around to get the temperature just right!

An old cooler that has made the perfect incubator....this pic shows the turner.

The PVC-T on the lower right is how I turned the eggs from the outside.

40 watt light bulb, thermostat, PC fan, small hole for the wires also pulls in fresh air.

Lockdown, just under the eggs is a small well that holds the water. I'll have to take a pic of that after these babies hatch!

Front view, In the front center you'll see a medicine bottle....this is a vent!

Hose to add water which also acts as a vent

YES! Sorry, I though I posted that here but I may not have - or it may have been lost in the 3080 posts, LOL! I received a check in the mail yesterday for the full amount including shipping. If there are any more eggs this season the original shipper is going to try to send some more eggs too. So we'll see. There are a couple eggs that are blue and very very thick so that I can't rally see anything at all. They will be the hardest to throw out

I may have missed that post. So glad you got your money back and I hope you get your replacement eggs soon.....I know the waiting is so hard!!!! Good luck with your eggs....who knows maybe you have a mighty chick in there!!!

OH Yipee! The baby Serama was born last night! By my counting 3 days late...
wee.gif
HOW TINY BABY is! And is the coloring of a CHIPMUNK! What color will this grow up to be? Are there any tricks to determining the sex at this point, or when and whaa?

The first pic below is the Serama in our hands, alone. She has a Splash Silkie as wonderful adoptive mama.

ALSO the other broody mama hatched out another Cream Legbar! The other 2 pics down below are the 2 CLs that Hatched almost a full day apart under a beautiful fluffy Buff Silkie. I am so excited! I know these are an auto sexing breed (ALSO CHIPMUNK COLORED.. to confuse the issue)...but I cant believe my eyes....ARE THESE 2 GIRLS we have here??
fl.gif
not the best pics, my GOOD camera is somewhere else running around the house!?

My first successful hatching eggs HERE, so I am a bit giddy. Ok.... I am totally in LOVE, peeps!

What do you think the Serama chipmunks Adult coloring will be? Any comments on how to ID the sex, now or later would be so helpful and much appreciated!

2 Cream Legbar chicks below hatched a day apart from light blue eggs. Girls? Chipmunk stripes on back and eyes, no white spot on head....hhmmm , one might be a bit lighter than the other though.

If you get more from that seller i would ask them to pack them differently. The foam tubes they used insulate temperature but not from impact or movement. Bubble wrapping each egg then placing them into an egg carton, then shipping peanuts around the carton in a box that is then packed into another box with peanuts, and top side arrows is the best method of shipping eggs. Plus bold red writing to say live chicken embryos inside, should help.

I got nervous leaving the babies with the mommas so I took them inside. But once inside the cjicks missed their moms SO much, I placed them back with them. I guess I'll just keep checking on them throughout the day to make sure they're eating and drinking.
