August Hatch-A-Long!

Sometimes that straw can scratch the eye.

I've thought about that too. I did have her sitting on timothy hay, but she burrowed her body deep in the nest it was touching the hard surface of the kennel, so I added this straw for extra cushion. This eye thing probably not as bad as a cracked egg and a dead embryo... or several since it does get messy. I'll try to get more timothy hay next time... it's just so expensive!

That little quail is so sweet. My curious nature has to ask...what do you do with the quail? Do people eat them?
I'm not sure about button quail - they're so teeny! I've seen a lot of members raise Coturnix quail for meat and eggs. From what I've read, they're easy to raise, easy to brood, good egg production, and mature fast. I might be moving into quail. but Definitely you can't raise buttons with chickens, looks like most raise them in a bird cage or aviary. I don't know much at all about quail though, that's just what I've read about them so far

buttons are just pets as they grow to only about the size of a sparrow...the parents the miracle chick and its siblings live in a 106qt sterilite tub with holes in the lid and short sides and hardware cloth zip tied over the holes

I'm hatching my cochin bantams in an egg carton and I turn them 5x's a day. I do not need to open the incubator...I can turn from the outside....basically they are tilted on an angle. This is a homemade incubator and has done the job very well! Today is lockdown day 18 and I will remove the egg turner and place the egg carton on the bottom....no more turning or opening the incubator until they hatch! I'm no professional by any means, this is just the method I chose to use.

So is there enough space in the egg carton for them to hatch?

I went outside before to check on my hen and her chicks I have had to put her back on her babies about 2 times already I found her this time roosting again so I put her down with them and she just sat next to them and started eating she didn't bite me at all when I touched her babies and she didn't make any noises she wouldn't sit on her chicks she just kept sitting beside them so in then end I had to move her on them my self what should I do?

Probably take them and raise them yourself

You might have to put them in a brooder or -with safety in mind - put a heat lamp in there while she's with the babies. I've read someone in the July thread who had 3 broodies at the same time, after awhile one stopped brooding at night & there was another one who always took the chicks for her... then it was back to business as usual during the day... chickens are quite interesting! Guess I'm SOL in that regards; I only have one broody! I really hope mine raises them, I want more broody hens from this hatch.

If I take them will she get depressed or just move on with her life and go back to pecking in the gardens with her chicken friends
