August Hatch-A-Long!

Can you post a picture? I am incubating silkies too. They are totally new to me, I have never even seen one in person, lol. I wanted to raise them because my grandkids want to hold my chickens and they are not interested in being held...besides they weight a lot now, lol. I also like that silkies are broody...might save me the stress of incubating

Here is 15 silkie cuteness!

My little (I mean that literally, it's the size of a silkie egg) went into lockdown early this morning. I candled it befor going in, no internal pip yet but lots o movement.

This egg came from my own birds, an eight month old Red Sexlink hen and my ,then 13 week old Barred Rock cockerel). No shipping, no refrigeration, no sitting for days, it came straight from the nest box moments after being laid and went into the incubator that was already running. I knew her eggs were fertile because I checked a few from that week and the yokes all had bullseye's. I wanted to see if the egg would hatch coming from a young cockerel.

Wonder what their baby will look like? Anyone ever mix a Barred Rock and Red Sexlink before?

It could look like a redbar. The red sex link is pretty close to a RIR.

We just hatched our first batch of WCBP eggs. We order 12, they were shipped well wrapped. Put 4 under broody silkie and 8 in incubator. Had only 3 hatch and 1 died, it had a large fluid sack on it's back.

Jill, the silkie, is a great momma. She is doing an excellent job. A little bummed by my first experience. Was hoping for a better success rate.

Well I hatched BSL over RSL, I got barred chicks and white chicks with a few black spots. The roosters now have a few red feathers coming in at 7 weeks old.

Roxie, shipped eggs are so so hard. The fluid sac (I am told) is a humidity issue. I myself have never seen one.
So sorry, but at least you have 2!!
I went through over 48 Polish Tolbunt eggs and I have a breeding pair, 2, yes only 2 out of 48. My frizzle Polish was 1 of 12 to hatch, and my beautiful Silver partridge silkie is 1 of 24 to hatch. So I know the pain of shipped eggs. But then I hatched 11 of 12 shipped eggs, go figure.

Awwwwww thanks! I have 6 with very huge vaulted skulls. They are very people friendly! How are the GL Babies doing???

They are great! Growing everyday, lol. They are in with the bigger girls (1-2 weeks older) and much happier. Crazy feathers coming in everywhere, but so beautiful. Funny to watch them scratch with the heavy foot feathers, they end up sweeping more than scratching! Will be updating photos on here soon, especially since they have been going out and foraging, and eating kale leaves hanging from the top of the brooder. Pecking order establishment is getting under way with the flock. So far it looks like we may have gotten lucky on gender, but still a bit early to say.

I got a call from a friend this morning saying my incubator at the fair was cold! Last night when they turned the lights off they turned off the incubator along with the lights. I had one chick in the incubator that was almost dead but we saved it. The brooder was cold too. The chicks in the brooder did fine but grrrrr. What an experiment. We have had 30 chicks hatch so far.
