August Hatch-A-Long!

Checked last 2 eggs, looks like 2 more malpositioned, one had a foot out the membrane into the air cell (it was the one I saw moving yesterday). Not sure how I ended up with 3 malpositions on eggs that weren't shipped and that were hatched in cartons. Some things just happen I guess. So for the first hatch of Aug. I have 1 each of Lav Am, Lav Orp and BY mix. Candled the 13 SFH eggs last night, 2 look questionable, but the other 11 have great veining and some "eyes". 1 of these has a pretty bad saddle cell, and 1 is moving a little bit, so I'll see how they progress. Both of them look strong right now though. Hatches are getting better each time. Learning a lot as I go, and it's amazing how different everyone on here has successful hatches. Just trying to find my best way! Now then.....let's go chickies!!!!!!

Nicole you are very correct. Each persons house, room, air temp, air humidity can all be different or fluctuate. Everyone needs base guidelines and then find out what works for them.

Hi All,

I am on day 18 of my first hatch ever and I am feeling kind of panicked.  I have a Brinsea Octogon 20 Advance with an auto-turner.  I have been running my incubator without water and the humidity has been 32 - 35%;  temp has been 99.8 with a variance of 0.1 degree.  Today, I took the incubator off the turner, took the holding rails out, and filled the water canals with water.  I set all the eggs on their sides with their air sac up.  I have 19 eggs and so far they all seem to be doing ok.  My 8 Easter Egger eggs have such a dark shell I have only been able to see and mark the retreating air cell. My 11 Araucana eggs are all developing - even the four that had been refrigerated.

It has been 2 hours since I "locked down" the incubator and the humidity is up to 56%.  I have the air vent 1/2ish open which is what the Brinsea booklet suggests.  I have been keeping it wide open during the entire incubation period.  How long does it take the humidity to reach 70%?  Any other advice?

I am new too and have found this article and the assisted hatching article at the bottom to be invaluable https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

I thought blue when she was first out but she has dried lighter so may be a splash. I have one half way out of the egg right now so we'll see what she look like. Hard to tell right now

I would open the vent and don't worry about the 70% a bit higher than you incubated at in the 45 - 50 range is enough...if you close the vent the chick doesn't get enough oxygen

Close your vent just a little bit more and give it a couple more hours.

OK. I went and checked and the vent is 1/2 open and it is at 52% I opened the vent completely as more oxygen makes sense. I have 19 eggs in the incubator and 8 of them are very large in size. We are going out this evening so I will check it later and see how it is doing.

Thanks for all your help!

I have the same bator I dry incabate in it all the time. Mine is hatching babies as we speak. the humidity is at 58% half or so of the eggs have hatched.
last time 19 of the 24 hatched, had 1 quitter 4 clear.
Once I but the water in at lock down I don't open it again until I take the chicks out. usually settles in about 53 % when a chick hatcheds it goes up alittle. If you open it you lose a lot of humidity....

Everything I read and see people writing about says not to open it. The Brinsea booklet says to open only every 6 hours at the soonest.

My question is - how do you know if you are out of water? and if you are how do you add it if you need to keep the incubator closed?
