August Hatch-A-Long!

the lavenders? on e bay...I'm really hoping several hatch...then next spring I will have a little of each that I wanted to blend...bantam silkies, frizzles and straight bantams to make some great birds....and believe me those aren't all but I'm really excited to maybe get a sizzle

well I don't sleep well regularly...but tonight I have a little darling that hatched...my granddaughter was visiting and set some of the eggs from my flock here and there so they are all due a day or 2 apart at this point...a week or so ago a few other stragglers hatched so we have several 1 2 and 3 week old...some hatched in the incubator without moving into lock down (which is a separate incubator just for hatching) because I didn't even realize they were due...they weren't on the schedule...so they thrived without added humidity... little troopers!

Hi All,
I have been running my incubator without water and the humidity has been 32 - 35%

It has been 2 hours since I "locked down" the incubator and the humidity is up to 56%.  I have the air vent 1/2ish open which is what the Brinsea booklet suggests.  I have been keeping it wide open during the entire incubation period.  How long does it take the humidity to reach 70%?  Any other advice?

This is only my second hatch & things are totally different from the first one. This one the humidity has been running in the 30's like yours (only my incubator is actually a cooler). The July hatch my bator was running at a steady 50% - I'm not sure what to tell you about lock down humidity, my first hatch seemed to all zip whenever it was at 70%, so I just kept it at 70... This one will probably go more like yours, & I'm afraid of being unable to keep the humidity high enough. We also got a lot of rain in July so I'm sure that plays a factor. I go in lockdown Friday, & there will be a thunderstorm all weekend, so I might end up putting them under my broody while taking away the other eggs if the power goes out.

if you close the vent the chick doesn't get enough oxygen

^THIS!!^^

Nicole you are very correct. Each persons house, room, air temp, air humidity can all be different or fluctuate. Everyone needs base guidelines and then find out what works for them.

I am new too and have found this article and the assisted hatching article at the bottom to be invaluable https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

My mix. The three I believe are RIR but the black one puzzles me. Solid black except yellow tips on wings and yellow lower belly. Legs are mostly black looking too

I have a few that look like that. They are black sex link x blue/black marans

What a pretty hen.

Thanks! She is the outcome of A blue marans x with black (I think black copper) marans

lol.....okay...I thought I read something about some refrigerated eggs that are due to hatch...I was curious

I mentioned in my post that 4 of my Araucana eggs were refrigerated. The darn hen quit laying as soon as I got the incubator. I happened to have 4 of her eggs in the refrigerator. I thought, what the heck - they either will or they won't. I let them settle and warm up at room temp for a couple of days. So far, they are developing. That darn hen? She laid her first egg in a month yesterday.

OMG I've GOT A PIP!!!! They're starting too early! I have to work all night and so does hubby! Not fair. I'm worried that nobody will be here to keep on eye on my temps. I've been adjusting by hand because I don't have a thermostat.....
