"Bacon would go so nice with these eggs..." He did draw the line there. He had a girlfriend before who had a pot belly pig she let come in her house. He hated that pig and said they are Soooo Nasty! I told him pigs shouldn't live IN your house. I know that if I really wanted to have a pig he would be ok with it...outside, lol. But I rarely eat pork and he is from a Jewish family so he never got pork as a kid and isn't all that hip on it now in his 50's.

You must be in Heaven on Earth there on your acreage after living in the inner city. My hubby is still adjusting after 18 months, baby steps, lol.

Baby steps and bribery..."oh look honey, you need a riding mower for the lawn (and by the way can you build me a chicken coop) ". He actually agreed we need a few more chickens (I have 10 now), so I blame him for rekindling the hatching addiction

I have silkies due the 21st as well! We will be hatching our fur babies at the same time. As for the humidity during the first 18 days, I just monitor it daily and if it begins to decrease I use a tube and syringe to fill the one reservoir. Once I am in lockdown I place a rag on the floor of the incubator, dipping down into the water wells, fill both water wells and wet the rage thoroughly. I lay one of the no-slip drawer pads were the eggs will lay so they have a soft yet grip area to walk on after they hatch, this will also hold a little water. I add a few pieces of cello sponges that are full of water too. This all helps to really get that humidity up for hatch time. I monitor this humidity several times a day and add water to the sponges thru the vent hole as needed,

I keep my humidity between 45-55% the first 18 days then bump it up to 65-75% during lockdown (with the vent open wide). During lockdown if the humidity drops below 70% that is when I add more water to my sponges. I have noticed that if you add hot water the humidity and temp will spike, cold water and it will dip. It always regulates itself within a short time either way. I keep my distiller water jug at room temp.

. Silkies!! I have a light buff hen and a black roo just my pet chickens. I don't have any show types, but they are so sweet!!

Woke up this morning to see a PIP from my little homegrown egg from my baby rooster...he was 13 weeks old when I collected this egg. I am so anxious to see what a Barred Rock Roo and Red Sexlink hen will make together. The egg is so tiny, I was concerned it would even grow, but it did and from candling I can tell the chick is really small, it doesn't take up any greater percentage than a regular chick in a regular egg. This egg is about the size of my silkie eggs.

Here are my babies from my June hatch, I believe them to be out of my Black Sex Link (barred) rooster over my Red Sex Link Hens.

This is the cockeral, Somehow I seemed to get a sex-linking trait with them as the cockeral has red coming in on the shoulders and the hens have no red at all. Please ignore the Blue Cote, the other babies were picking at his tail a few weeks ago.


Here's the pullet of the same mix. A smutty white with a few black splotches.


This pullet I believe is out of my Black Australorp Rooster over a Red Sex Link Hen. She is a crisp white with a few black splotches and has the Aussie thick black legs.
