August Hatch-A-Long!

OXINE!!! If one had to use it for eggs... How long do you use it for the incubator? 10 days or the whole time?

I had to put layers of paper towels under broody, she widened the nest & they were directly on the kennel tray- eep!!! Candled 9, tossed one. I don't think my black copper Marans will ever produce strong embryos. They all die before 7 days. 8 are doing very well, on the other hand! I'm sure she feels somewhat relieved not having to sit on the largest egg (the one that didn't develop). I noticed a slightly porous egg she had on the back end, away from the cluster. So I put that one back. Looks like its developing as it should. All embryos look 7-10 days old.

Nicole doesnt sound like a cat..... pulling it thru the bars more like raccoon
They are wiliey ive hear and do that.
Sorry to hear it.!! Cat might paw it and scratch it don't think it could do what happened there.
Good luck on the new chicks!

Thought of that too, but have never seen a coon, certainly not middle of the day in bright daylight. We see tons of cats. The third thought was maybe one of the younger foxes from this year. We have seen several kit to adolescent sized foxes over the last few months. Just assumed cat since nothing was eaten or attempted. Just some feathers (12-20 total) and a few bloody scratches, along with the neck. It just didn't seem like a predatory bird, which are also very prevalent. In any event, we are talking about putting out some traps to see. Thanks Rox! Still thinking 2 girls and a boy with how they are feathering in, but they are all doing very well, lots of peeping and pooping, lol!

WOW!! Glad to see all the hatching!!!! Sweetapple, glad the little one with spraddle is doing fine for you, hope the little bit gets all fixed up and moving perfectly. I locked down 8 of 13 SFH eggs Thursday night, have been waiting ever since.

These shipped in cooler weather than my first set of eggs (thanks to a very mild month here in STL), and my first Aug. babies were from a local source (Thanks Roxanne!). This is my best hatch so far on chicks, lets hope they all make it out! Have been making small tweeks along the way to try to help. So happy it seems to be working! Due to hatch in the next day or so, really glad I'm doing more coop work tomorrow! In sad news, we lost our first bird to a predator. Suspect one of the neighbors cats got her

, but it was sad since it was our flock "leader", and was one of the first chicks we got that lead to the math problems. She was a favorite of the whole family, and a beautiful EE. DH had them out in a large dog kennel to get some fresh grass and bugs, and when he went out to check she had been pulled through the kennel bars/wire. Some blood and feathers missing, looked more scratched, but neck was broken from trying to pull her through. Anyway.......let's hope I hatch out these 8! We only plan on keeping 2 or 3, but a guy in mid-west MO lost most of his pullets to flash flooding not too long ago, so any extras are going to him!
that's a raccoon

Pip, and now a zip. This is my first hatch, and everything that could go wrong has so far. The chick is making plenty of noise. I've got my fingers crossed.
