August Hatch-A-Long

My last chick has one bad leg but its getting better and he can get around fine. I was going to tape it but I feel like it was higher up, it had its leg up over its head in the egg. No body picks on him and they all get along and sleep together. The chick will be just a pet or dinner for someone since I believe it has a single comb

Hope your chick does ok!

I am glad your chick is doing better! I think mine is too... he also had his leg over his head in the egg. He can stand up now... I put some thinner tape on him and he is more able to move around so I hope he'll be better soon. His brooder mate is not the sweetest buddy... it's one reason I only have one child, I just hate sibling rivalry

Should I just take them out of the turner and lay them on thier sides or what? What should I put them in when I take them out? I'm not understanding the egg carton method. Does anyone have pictures

first some questions:

1. how long have they already been incubating? (some people say it isn't good to switch from on the side to standing up, but I am not sure why that matters)

2. Are they shipped eggs? (some people always incubate upright, but it is VERY important to incubate upright if you have shipped eggs. The reason why is that often the air cell is detached and wants to float all over the place. If you incubate with the egg standing up, then the air cell will stay at least close to where it is supposed to be.)

3. If your egg turner only turns eggs that are on their sides, and your eggs are NOT shipped, leave them where they are!

(no reason to give yourself more work)

4. If they were shipped, and your turner will not turn them while upright, AND you don't mind hand turning, then take an egg carton. Many people suggest first cutting out the very bottom of every egg cup, not so much so that the egg falls through, but enough to help increase air flow. This is more important if you are using one of those plastic egg cartons, and not so important (and can even be skipped) if you are using one of the paper egg cartons. After you prepare the egg carton, put all of the eggs in the egg carton. Put the egg carton inside your incubator. Pick up a big fat book, put the book under one corner of the incubator, so that your poor incubator is now at a steep angle. Make sure that the fan/motor/etc. are still working, and the incubator is not at risk of falling off of the book. TADA! You are done. Some odd hours later, walk past your incubator, take out the book, and put it under a DIFFERENT corner of your incubator.

Got it?

The eggs hatch great while still in the egg cartons.

I'm sorry I forgot to mention! They have been in an egg turner since day one. It is day 18 tonight
Oh and these are my own eggs not shipped. And I'm using a still air (not sure if that matters or not)

I'm thinking of just lining the bottom with paper towels and filling the water holes. And also putting a little dish of water with sponge cut up and a straw through the vent hole.

So if I need to add more water to the sponge I can without opening it :D

I think I. Going to just put the little ones in the egg carton I've only got 12 eggs right now and I have two cartons so I can space them out a little.

I'm hoping by putting paper towel liner on the bottom this will be ok? And the dish with the sponge.

I have to go ahead and do it now or ill spend another 2 hours looking up methods. But still not getting answers lol. I thought I had this planned out yesterday but I keep remember things I'm not sure of. Phew I hope I'm doing this right.
