August Hatch-A-Long

May i join in   .. Ive 11 eggs in bator today is day 10 there due on 14th August. Just another barnyard special. mix of RIR, LS, BS crosses.

Although ive a little experiment going on in there. You'll laugh at this cross lol my light sussex rooster got the grip of my silver seabright, so i put the eggs in bator too as a experiment and lo and behold they are alive. Hes a massive rooster and shes only teeny tiny so i was shocked to say the least.!

Welcome! I have about 40 eggs due to hatch on 8/14 too!

I just had a broody hatch a chick this morning. They were unexpected. I have two little bantam hens that are separated from the rest of my flock due to the massive size difference. I was not expecting any of her eggs to be fertile. Well, one of them got out for about an hour one day... And apparently had a run in with my huge orpington rooster. I can't even imagine what a silkie/ cochin mix crossed with a buff orp will turn out like..

Wow so were both in the same strange boat lol PLUS our eggs due same day...weird or what lol

Really hope all goes well for you keep updating!

I candled my eggs last night, Day 2 in the incubator but I don't know what I expected to see other than the air sacks. I saw a lot of yolks, a couple of eggs I couldn't see the air sack cause the shell was too dark. I did figure something out though, at least I think I did. I have an egg now and then that I don't know if a chicken laid a very large egg or a duck laid a smallish egg. The duck eggs are a white color while these eggs are a kind of blush, very light color but not white. While I was candling last night I realized that the blush colored eggs don't have striating marks in the shell like the duck eggs. The duck eggs have these striating swirls in the shells, like they are thicker in those markings than the next "panel" of the egg. I didn't notice this until I was on the last blush egg and only had one more duck egg to go. I did not want to keep opening the bator to check on this theory so I am going to wait until day 7 when I need to candle them again and then I will check to see if all the duck eggs have the striations and the blush eggs do not. I asked somewhere if there was a way to tell small duck eggs from large chicken eggs and didn't get an answer, maybe this is it.

Disclaimer: I have 2 Pekin hens, 1 Fawn Indian Runner and a Cayuga drake. The striations might or might not be particular to one of these breeds.

I am so excited to hear and see all the eggs being set and a few already have baby chicks. My eggs are on lockdown starting tonight.

Broody mamma has one more under her that should hatch with this baby, but I think the other eggs will actually hatch next week????? YIKES!!!! So excited though and Peep is taking good care of her baby!!!! Post a better picture when Peep lets me get one..LOL
