August Hatch-A-Long

My day 10 candle didn't go as I had hoped. We got a massive windstorm. Our power was out for a day. The low on my thermometer recorded at 79!

I was out of town until two hours before our power kicked back on. I didn't get to candle on day 10 which would have been Saturday because I had to help my Mom for health issues. She is OK, it was just a scare, but I stayed the night with her to help calm her nerves. Then I came home to the power outage of about 22 hours...The bator had been doing such a good job at keeping stable, I didn't want to unplug it for the hour & 1/2 drive up to my Mom's house. I am so glad my Mom is alright, but so upset about my poor eggs. I candled them when the power came back on, just to see if I could find any signs of life still, and to inspect them for bad smells or weeping. My little Miracle Egg, #12, showed me movement again! Is it possible that this egg could survive this prolonged dip in temperature? It was slower movement than day 7 candle; but I keep hoping that it will pull through & this will just delay the hatch date. Is there any hope? I thought I saw slight movement in 2 other eggs, but that might have just been wishful thinking. Nothing was obviously dead, No smells or weeping. I saw a lot more veins than day 7 candle, and the bantam assorted egg with the detached air cell seemed to have gained some stability in it; the air cell hardly moved during candle. Has anyone ever had any eggs survive something like this?

So sorry for all your trouble but hoping your eggs pull through. I worry about our power since in Florida we always have thunderstorms which can lead to power out for a few but so far so good. Hope they do good for you!

So ending the day and still no sign of the other 2 eggs hatching under my broody Peep...I am dying to know what's going on under there

Maybe when I wake up the 2nd egg that looked like it was at the same point of development will hatch????? At least in a bator you can peek in the window and see what's happening....LOL!!! Not with a broody

Momma Peep looks so sweet with her new fuzzy! Congratulations, enjoy all the amazing cuteness

. I don't know about those other eggs; if the seller mixed up the ages of them like you suspected maybe Peep knows what they need best & that's why she's not budging...I really hope those chickies make their appearance soon!

YAY IT'S DAY 7!!!!!!!!!!! My oldest son and I candled our 36 eggs today while the little guys were napping. We have 18 eggs with embryo movement and 2 eggs that are questionable. The two that we aren't sure on were pretty dark shelled so it was hard to see if there was an embryo but we did see some veins so I put them back in the incubator. A few of the ones that were bad had a very defined red ring around them. I opened all the eggs up to see what was inside. Most of them were just not fertile but the few that had developed a little were pretty neat to look at. Very happy I could share that with my boy too! He loved it! Unfortunately all the pretty green eggs were not fertile and just had yolks inside with no white bullseye. They were the ones I really wanted to hatch too! Oh well, better luck next time with the colored eggs right? Overall I'd say 20 eggs out of 36 for our first time incubating is pretty good!!!

I am on day 7 too! I have been candling randomly but many of the eggs are so dark that I just have to wait and see. I really can't tell if I have any clears or quitters. I figure it will be more obvious as time progresses. Only two weeks to go!

Yay!!! Hatching buddies!!! What kind of chicks are you expecting? This was my very first time candling and I'm happy that I was able to tell the quitters from the bouncers LOL I also have no idea what kind of chicks are going to pop out of these eggs. They were bought as a mix at the local livestock auction. Kinda makes it more exciting not knowing what's gonna come out haha!

I have mixed chicks too. A kind woman gave them to me... they were laid the morning I set them. They have copper maran and speckled sussex roosters over copper maran, speckled sussex, welsummer and americana hens. So there may be pure copper maran or speckled sussex but mostly mixed. The eggs range from chocolate brown to brown, light brown and green eggs. I did candle the lighter ones and found one clear and one quitter. The green eggs aren't clear so I assume they are progressing and I can't see a thing in the darkest eggs but all but one are darker than before I set them so looks like they are progressing too : ) It will be fun to see what comes out... funny we have similar eggs!

Gosh I hope so!!!!! I figure I will just take her lead and leave her if she stays setting on the eggs and put them in the bator if she decides to get off the nest

I have food and water by the nest and today she was showing baby how to eat and drink
love.gif
I am just worried the other eggs are gonna wait to hatch until the real due date which gives her another week on the nest...too long to stay sitting with a baby I think???

Day 10 for me so I candled. (I wait a bit longer because my eggs are dark brown or blue and the best I can see is that something large is developing versus a blob where an undeveloped yolk is). Out of 14 eggs (astute readers will catch that I said in an earlier post that I set 12...gee, just where did those extra eggs come from...!) eleven are developing. The three that weren't are all from the same hen.

Good news!!!! And yes...it is such a mystery how those extra eggs just seem to make their way into the bator

I think it's cool that we have similar eggs! The ones that are developing are white, light brown and an olive-ish color. It's going to be fun trying to figure out what our little fluff balls are!!!
