August Hatch-A-Long

That is so awesome!! Your little chickie needed company so much!

I have (5) five week old chicks, and (3) 1 week olds. This weekend it was so hot & our older group were happy exploring their new run so I thought I'd try introducing them. The older girls were so nice to the little fuzz butts! 2 of the older girls even let the tiny ones eat food out of their mouths. DH & I spent over two hours in the run with them, they were so cute together

. I won't leave them alone together because of my sister's experience, but it was very encouraging to see such a warm reception from our bigger babies. I want them to have supervised time together every day now so that when it comes time to integrate it will be less stress on them.

Any others hatch out?

I missed this post. I had another little one hatch a few days later on lockdown day and then the rest of them started hatching, um, I don't have my book right here but I think they started hatching on day 20. I think there were 11 out of 15 of my mixes hatch and 9 out of 11 silkies hatch.

Well yesterday was day 10 so I candled again. 6 out of the 20 that were developing look like they might be quitters. Hopefully they were just resting and that's why I didn't see any movement from them but I'll check them again on Monday(day 14). I wish it was time for lockdown already...I'm getting anxious to meet my little mystery chickies!!!

All 8 of our chicks have now hatched. They are all just glorious!! We have ended up with 2 multi coloured Frizzles, 3 multi coloured Silkies/Sizzles and 3 grey or blue? (I'm not sure how to tell, lol!) Silkies/Sizzles. Crackle hatched perfectly, and is a grey/blue Silkie/Sizzle. The chickies are so small that they can fit through the tiny squares of the cat crate! Sammy has already started teaching them how to eat. It's so sweet, she's a great Mum!

Sammy has already started teaching them how to eat. It's so sweet, she's a great Mum!

LOL..isn't that the way it seems to go???? I will probably have 3 more hatch from this batch for a total of 4 and boy do I hope at LEAST one is a girl...we are not allowed to have roosters   do you know if the whole feather sexing thing works for cochins?

I was told when I got mine that there is no way to know and the Internet says there is no way to know. BUT! Last year when I started my flock as babies I had a few Cochins and I tried to do the wing sexing thing. I went threw literally 9 roosters until I ended up with 4 hens it was ridiculous. Every other week I was bringing a chick or two back to the breeder and we'd swap them out in hopes of the next chick being a hen. To get to the point though, every single chick I had when I feather sexed them was accurate. By about a week or 2 I noticed the girls had longer wings and the boys wings were much shorter. So I would say yes you can, just off of my experience that method was true, and that was proof with about 15 different chicks.

Maybe not by day old chicks but I would say at around day 5 when there wing feathers are almost as long as there butt you can tell.

Congrats! I've had eggs pip at the wrong end. They usually hatch out fine by themselves, but I do occasionally have to help. You might want to keep a close eye on that one. Hopefully it'll make it out with no problems though!
