August Hatch-A-Long

I just got all my eggs from being shipped!!! So excited! They all looked good...none cracked! Only one might have a crack in it, it had some sticky stuff on it so I lightly washed it and dried it so I will see tomorrow before I put it in incubator what it looks like. I will be putting 12 blue wyandotte eggs and 15 blue laced red wyandottes all for hatch on September 11!!!!

Hooray for more wyandottes! I'm getting a little more confident about the sexes of my 6 week old BLRW. I'm thinking I have 4-5 boys and 2-3 girls. Ugh. I'm having the worst luck hatching females from them. Hopefully, I'll at least end up with a nice trio of them. I'm debating having one more hatch this year and ordering some eggs.

Candle your eggs before you set them. You'll be able to see any cracks in them much more easily. Good luck with your next hatch! :)

Thank you so much!! I will definately candle before setting them this time. I feel a lot better and will see how this second hatch goes! I have a question open to anyone, I was just reading a great forum on dry hatching and all was good until I got down to day 14. At this time it said to close an air vent and on day 18 it had both vents closed?? I'm just wondering if anyone has done this and if its good. Makes since in all with the humidity but wasn't sure about good ventilation. This https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-incubate-hatch-eggs-using-the-dry-incubation-method \\

Ok, so it's day 22 and out of 17 eggs 4 pipped but only 3 hatched. It's been about 13 hours since the three hatched and none of the other eggs have been pipped. Should I wait longer or dispose of the others? Also the chicks seem to be very sleepy. I figured by now they would be up and active. They have food and water and the temp in the brooder is good. They seem to walk a bit then lay down and fall asleep right away lol. Hopefully they are fine, just tired from hatching!

Congratulations!! Chicks are pretty tired for a day or so and then should get more active. I give mine vitamin water as an extra boot and dip their beak in it when I first put them in the brooder.

As for the rest of the eggs, this is what I do... when there is a pip that hasn't hatched I open the hole a tiny bit and usually find the chick is in an odd position. The chick may have grown a little too big to move around it the shell. After 12 hours or so after pipping, they have usually absorbed all their yolk and I can zip around the base of the air cell area( chip shell around) . I take the top off and wet/ put bacitracin ointment on membrane to see if there are veins that have not absorbed. After 12 hours, generally not. I then push the membrane over the chicks head and get their head and beak out of the shell. They are still in an egg cup and I put them back in the bator like that. Then they take a little while to recover and push out of the shell when they are ready.

I know lots of people wait days before they help chicks out but I found if I determine they are not in a position to do it themselves, if I help them at 12 or so hours after pip, then they are normal healthy chicks.

These are just my thoughts... go with your gut : )

Anyone on here hatching quail today?

I have quail eggs that will maybe hatch today....

-sigh-

my auto turner on my incubator stopped working, and I didn't know it, for the first about 5 days of incubation!

So, I am super wondering what, if anything, will hatch.

I actually thought that they should have hatched yesterday, but only now do I have two pips with tiny starts of zips.

I have 18 eggs that are "clearly not clear". the darn things are so tiny, as well as pretty dark and spotted, so I really don't know more than that.

I AM NOT A PATIENT PERSON!!!!

How are the quail coming along!!

I haven't hatched quail yet, but I have some tiny Serama eggs and they can be hard to see into... so I feel your frustration! I hope some are hatching for you!

So my little pipped Serama egg yesterday... had not progressed so I looked closely and he could pip but couldn't move in there at all. I am not sure if this guy was one in the bator and maybe humidity was too high? I am loosing track of these Serama eggs. I helped him out a little and put him in the bator till he climbed out of his bottom shell and dried a bit. I put him back under mama and today he is doing great! Another all yellow chick! Can't wait to see if they have any color come in!
