August Hatch-A-Long

Hummm...about not turning.......with shipped eggs.....

I have just turned very gently, but started at day 2.

My hatch rate has been all over the place, understandable with shipped eggs.

Has anyone done a comparison? On the SAME set of eggs, turned some from the beginning, and the rest after day 5????

As to my quail... :ya

I already have OVER 1/3 hatch rate, on shipped eggs! Yippy!

I tried to not turn my shipped eggs for 5 day but I couldn't do it! I started turning them once a day on day 3 I think. Now I am up to twice a day : )
lol...Ok I think I will just plug in the turner on day 3. This group was sent by two different people but both were shipped in holders that kept them upright and they seem to be much better. I think I only have two eggs with detached air cell out of 27! I did wait the 5 days on the first group and I will say I do think its the right thing if you have a bunch of detached cells. I had just about all detached from the last group and by the time lockdown I only had one. Of course if they don't get out of the egg I guess it doesn't matter either way!! LOL Maybe day 3 will be lucky and dry hatch and leaving them in cartons to hatch!

I only have hatched once and I did wait the 5 days. I think it definatly helps with detached air cells. As for the hatch rate I couldn't tell. My humidity was a little high in the beginning and I still feel thats why I had five not get out at hatch but who knows..

I do have 4 chicks and had no quitters. They either were viable from the beginning or nothing. I will start turning my new batch of eggs on day 3, I believe. Good luck with your hatch!

My best hatch rate so far, I started turning them on day 2, and all of the air cells had been very detached. out of 9 eggs 8 hatched, and the one that didn't hatch was a clear.

Oh, and all were properly positioned and hatched by themselves.

Well, the remainder of my eggs didn't hatch, they all were dead. Fully formed and everything but they were not in the proper position to pip internally :( Yeah, I dissected them all, so interesting to see them completely enclosed within the membrane! I'm wondering if it's due to me moving them on Friday(lockdown day). Maybe that could have effected their positioning? The eggs with twins in it did indeed have twins. One chick was pretty much fully formed but the other one was funky looking...I should have taken pictures. Neat stuff. So although I only successfully hatched three chicks I'm happy! I also have some partridge brahmas arriving at my post office today so my little ones will have lots of friends :)

The worst batch of eggs I had were my peachicks. 9 made it to lockdown and only 4 hatched... turns out that is working out for the best, but many were seriously malpositioned! Many of those eggs were not fresh, and had just been laying out in the yard... not kept in stable cool temp, not turned... or anything. They were all collected a couple days before I got them. So I wonder if (lack of) freshness and pre-incubating care can cause some malpositioning.

Yay! Little quail babies!! So happy!!

I'm gonna have to try incubating quail one of these days...

and then turkeys... and then...

Meet Gus and Winifred (I had them briefly sitting on the block for a picture) while their mother watched from the nest. Hopefully we'll have a few more siblings joining these two in the next few days but until then, they will just have to do with bonding.

Wow, That is great!! I would love that to happen! Do you dry hatch, still or forced air bator? Sounds like day 2 might be the ticket!

I wonder the same. When you get the eggs shipped you don't know for sure how long the seller has had them and how they have been cared for. I will say that my BLR eggs looked awesome when I candled before putting in bator. My blues, I didn't feel the same, kinda looked clear but I don't have a clue as for sure what I'm looking at. The BLR eggs looked like you could see the yoke which I think that is what your looking at...lol I just know come day 7 and I see it moving I will be happy!
