Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Wow, I go away for one day and come back to 5 pages of posts to catch up on.

Satay, I am so sorry to hear about your losses, very sad

Had a great day at Tangalooma and I am positive it was cooler there than at home. I was very happy to get home and find that my little girls have made it through the day. My son kept one eye on them and the mister seems to have done it's job. While they do not like the water they do like laying in the damp earth to keep cool.
They are normally very talkative but are oddly quiet today .. Hubby thinks the heat has probably knocked them around a bit. Never thought I would ever say "luckily it is only predicted to be 33C today" because that is still pretty warm but sure beats 41C! It is overcast today so while still warm, hopefully no burning Sun as well and cooler in the shade.

CONGRATULATIONS Luke!

That picture is absolutely gorgeous, melts my heart! Sorry if I missed it in the 5 pages I just read through .. any news on more bubbies?

Thanks. Ye she wouldn't stop chirping until we gave her that soft toy.lol.
Well that chick went down to my broody and was happily accepted by her now new mum and I have 2 more chicks pipping. A WLH and a bantam egg.

Bear with me while I catch up on nearly 500 posts :) Thanks for that guys :)
Sorry I haven't been on, had my sister from Caboolture down for the holidays, trying to introduce my 7 babies to the older flock, so much fun :) I thought there was a couple of roosters in there, my bad, my son found that out today, Alfie tried to attack him as he went to pick up one of the "roosters" lol You can imagine what happened :) 2 of my baby bantams went to their new home only for one of them to be eaten by a snake :( sad day :( But on the upside, looks like I have a young cock and a hen bantam :) Will take picks as soon as I can :)
Garfield, my son's cat caught his first rat :) bought time he started paying his way :) Now have adopted a new kitten as well, I know I am a sucker, she is supposed to be 8 weeks old, but smaller than a 5 week old kitten. She was living on adult dry dog food :( Can't imagine what damage is already done to her poor liver :( But anyway, called her Shelby :) She's a darling, gone from all hissy and aggressive to purring constantly in a week :)
My poor old girl Zena is still going, despite what vets have said :) Her and our mini poodle Fifi have been living in the pool :)
Anyway enough blah from me :) will catch up on posts now :) MWAH!!!!!!

Here are my breeder pen designs ( drawn by me

).
I began cutting my timber to size yesterday and today I will finish that and try to begin construction.

It's going to have corrugated sheeting for the roofing. Sides and back will be made from palate planks which will have a 0.5cm gap between each one. The front hasn't been decided on yet. Either left open or a big hinged door.

So the floor of the covered ( coop ) part is going to be 2.40 x 1.10m each breeder. It's going to be 1.2m high. They are going to be on a 60cm stilt so the chickens can go under and seek shade.

The pens will have a small run ( not sure of size yet ). Obviously 4.8 wide but not sure how long yet.

Ladders leading up to the coop part. There will be 2 nest boxes in each coop and a rooster bar.

Measurements.

How do you get the eggs out?
How do you get in to clean it?
What will you make the floor out of? (remembering chook **** will rot most untreated timbers)
I would suggest a mesh front with a smaller door.
