Hi Karen, the initial feather loss around the tail area is more than likely due to over mating. When the hen is incubating her eggs she will pluck her belly feathers out to ensure good heat contact with the eggs. I would dust her with poultry dust and check her legs for mites.

We have a RIR hen that is in her first moult after being broody, brown feathers everywhere, but the auburn ones coming in now are awesome.

Are bush babies what you call chicks that are hatched by broody's that run off into the bush then appear 3 weeks later laden with chicks?
Do you have any pictures of your soaked Cochin? That would be a sight to see. Glad he's all better again.

Yeah that right about the bush babies Luke. I am really not sure how some of them manage to hatch eggs as sizzle has been back in her pen every night so I had no idea she had a stash anywhere, I really should have taken pics of big man my cochin roo. He did look a site but was happy to just sit there in the sink and let me wash him. He is a lovely gentle boy. I should have taken a photo of the g's.. my two turkey gobblers. I was worried about them with all this heat and i go down to the duck pen and here they are lying in the clam shells the ducks use. Funny boys. They were nice and cool .

Glad it's cooling down there Sandee. Today is supposed to be our last of the hottest days but we will see.
