Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Mine will leave the layer pellets too. I buy 3 bags of tassie hen ( free range mix with shell grit ) and add I bag of happy hen pellets. The pellets are much smaller than others on the market. In winter I add a few kilos of hulled oats and black sunflower seeds. Mine also get sardines in oil mixed in cooked pasta and raw egg at least once a week, table scraps raw pumpkin, scrambled egg, yoghurt and at this time of year lots of fruit. In short, my chooks eat everything but pellets.
Thanks Fancy, are both those brands made in Tassie? Mine get all similar treats but I really want to find a good and "palatable" stable brand to stock.

I pay $25-$20 for 20kg.. I know the chick starter I got was $25 for 20kg but can't remember how much the chooks crumble was sorry either $20 or $25.. Mine too eat absolutely everything (almost) they love rice! And thanks to Fancy they get sardines too on the regular now haha.. I even gave them lobster shells that still had meat in there and my god they didn't raise they're heads for hours! It was Christmas Day mind you haha

I know it's well and truly gone for another year now but did anyone else decorate their coop for Christmas? Heheee!..

The tassie hen is similar to another free range mix made by natures best. I think happy hen is from Victoria. If all else fails, mix your own. A bag of triticale is relatively cheap and my feed store sells cracked maize, sunflower , hulled oats etc all by the kilo. I think Bens hens has a recipe on his thread. Don't be afraid to ask to see what is in the bag. Our tucker box has sample jars of the feed on the counter. There are shorter narrower pellets on the market. My silkies can't physically swallow the longer ones.

Sydney your coop is adorable. Ours got crayfish for Xmas too. I also gave them the hambone to clean up. Then the dogs got the bone.

Thanks Fancy. They should pay you for the photo endorsement your chooks are giving!

Ok so my 6 girls are 20 weeks old today....
And still no eggs :| I have 1 leghorn, 2 australorps and 3 isa browns!
I have a fake egg in the nesting box and they have been eating layer mash for 2 weeks! Is this normal????

Your Isa brown should be laying and the others soon. With all the hot weather you guys have been having I'm not surprised things are a little haywire though.

I was at Enfield last Tuesday. At the moment, they have the most gorgeous silver laced rooster out the back. Not sure how, as I'm pretty sure local law disallows it! I use cedar sawdust on the floor of the coop, gotten free from the local Mitre10. Works well, though probably doesn't smell as fresh as the apple concoction.

I would be very careful about using cedar shavings in your coop. They become toxic when wet. If you are going to use shavings best to stick to pine. Blackwood is carsenegenic.
