Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Howdy Megacakes :)

Is the shed just going to be for sleeping, nesting and sheltering from the weather? Will they have an outside run for during the day?
Many, many years ago I had 6 LF's whose roost and nesting box were in the garden shed. They free-ranged the garden all day and only went back to the shed to roost or lay. I was vigilant with keeping it clean and the only 'messy' spot was under the roost. I honestly never had a problem with smell. They shared the shed with some garden tools and other bits and pieces and this was never a problem. I used to let them out every morning and once they had gone to bed, just shut the shed door for their overnight safety.
Try the deep litter system - the mess is continually turned over by the chooks and breaks down naturally
from biological action. shovel it out once a year for your garden.

Hi Teila. I'm looking at fencing off a section of ground outside the shed (which is why I'd like to get the automatic door) and I'll probably also continue the run through a big patch of bamboo as well so they have some plants to hide and scratch in. It will really just be their nesting and sleeping area. Like you, I'm planning on them sharing the shed, but I will partition it off to keep the hubby happy. We have a wooden IKEA shelf already in there, so I'll just turn it around and cover the back with mesh and use the existing coop door to seal off the rest. I can't believe how crappy the original coop I bought is...just over a year and it's basically fallen apart.

Yes, I do this throughout their runs. Bamboo sheds a lot, all year round!

Megans chickens if you don't want her to go clucky and stop laying then collect the eggs regularly and move her out of the nest. Others here will now methods to break her cluckiness better than me. Keep your eye on her though in case she starts a nest in your yard. Our second outside mamma is due to hatch soon :)
Thankyou!! Yeh she actually layed in the dog house this morning! So it's like she was making a nest!
