Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

First I have heard of that. I was told to break them in a glass to make sure meals were not wrecked if any had blood spots. We blew out our first blue egg and first brown egg and kept them, the rest the family ate poached on toast.

I think that is a size thing. I was warned off hatching eggs that were smaller than normal, or too large as it can complicate the hatch. One breeder gave the number of larger that 50g for pullet eggs to hatch, but that is a guide I guess as our Araucana eggs are still only about that size. Saying that, I did have a cross breed egg that had wry tail from a pullet last hatch.

Thats how I would look at it too.

Thanks everyone for ur informative info!
As I've never had chickens before I just listened to what the poultry guy near me said lol..
I will clearly be coming here for information next

!

One has been on antibiotics as she had surgery, so we did throw out all her weeks supply of eggs ( she layed a week earlier then the rest) we have had a few dud eggs and I few have been a bit weird on the inside! But tomorrow marks 1 week of laying.. So I will start keeping them from then...

Also is it normal for 1 to still not be laying?? She is 23 weeks Saturday!

You can eat any egg that is not wormed or had had antibiotics.. Sometimes with first layers you will get fart eggs. Which are small eggs that contain no yolk. Maybe this is what they were referring too. 23 weeks is not that long depending on the breed. When I had brahmas they were nearly a year old before they started to lay. My marans started at 18 weeks.

Because I didn't know they could eat egg lol! I have been told not to feed them egg as it gives then a taste for their own egg, and they will start breaking their own??

First time ever having chickens so really have no idea lol!
I boil up and then mash up eggs that are excess here and then feed them to the flock shell and all. They are a good source of extra calcium..

I think you can eat them Megan. I would only not eat them if they where deformed inside or out in anyway.
I have only heard that you are not supposed to hatch new layers eggs as they can sometimes come out deformed.

Yes well size, porous, misshapen, wrinkled and a few more are all reasons not to hatch eggs, be it from new layers - old layers. But me, personally I wouldn't hatch any pullet eggs for the first week or so, just to be on the safe side and that makes sense to me.lol.

Quote: Oh my goodness!!! Your chickens have missed out on a real treat Megan.
Next time you get some eggs you don't want etc make a heap of scrambled eggs up and THEY WILL LOVE IT!! It's also a great way to conceal some things that chickens don't eat but are good for them. I put mint in with mine, natural yoghurt. Some times I mix scrambled eggs and warm porridge for them....it looks horrible but they love it!!!!LOL.

So you don't wanna come cuddle my pet ones then :p

I'll pass on that. Glad to hear you got a little bit of precipitation .
Mine had scrambled eggs for breakfast! So long as what you feed them doesn't resemble a fresh laid egg, they'll never put 2&2 together. If I feed them a cracked egg in the pen, I'm careful to crack the egg without them seeing. Then I put my boot on the shell and crash it up good.
I had one hatch yesterday that hadn't absorbed the yolk. Kept it in the brooder with the rabbit overnight. The cord and yolk dried up so I cut it off. I have put it out with mum and am hoping for the best. The weather is fairly mild expect 25 today, I'll just have to keep an eye on the little one, it's not getting around as well as it's hatch mates.
