Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi, i have just gotten a RIR red rooster, Ive heard that if you put him in a cage where he cant lift up his head to crow it will stop him crowing, is this true if so I'm definitely doing it.

I'm no sure on that one Luke. A few weeks ago i went out to check on the chooks in the middle of the day and i saw 2 people standing in the guy next doors place near my chook pen.(still prob a couple of normal size house blocks from our pen to their fence) It was the real estate. (the man next door lost his wife to cancer over a year ago and has his house for sale). As i walked out my roosters and i have a lot of them all decided to crow one after the other . Meanwhile I am there going shoosh boys. Nope they get louder like they are saying we don't like this guy so we will shoo him away lol. I felt bad hoping they had not put the guy off. Mind you the neighbour on the high side of them has old car bodies all over his 6 acres so prob more chance of that putting them off but still.

those roosters all ways seem to crow at the worst possible times. I was sitting on the table outside of the chicken run watching my new rooster when 2 of the neighbors came down just to say hi (we have very nice neighbors), they looked straight at my new rooster and asked what breed of chicken he was (not knowing at the time he was a rooster) i lied and told them she was a Jersey Giant hen (them not knowing that breed of chicken, the name was fitting) but just as i had said that the rooster decided to let out about 3 consecutive really loud crows

, well that blew his cover. silly rooster.

Thank you . I thought i was seeing things when i looked in the stripey pen yesterday. Now my one quail eggs is taking pride of place on my computer desk:)

First chicks from my latest experiment- Lavender Aruacana crossed with Bantam White Leghorn-
these should lay pure blue eggs. I am a little surprised at the colours of the chicks- I would have expected all chicks to be yellow.
My most reliable old broody - she must be more than 10 years old!

Wow Ash. I love your new chicks. You will have to post some pictures of the egg colour once they start to lay. A broody 10 year old hen is fantastic. My oldest hen that i know of is 9 yrs old but she is starting to look like an old lady now. She has never been broody that i know of. Chooka my 8 year old banty pekin goes clucky every year.
