Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi Fellow Ozzies, I'm a new chook to the forum living in Yass Valley (Canberra area).

My husband calls me the bird whisperer but after reading through a heap of threads on here I think I have a long way to go to truly live up to that name lol.

I love all things animal (land, sea, and air) but most especially birds and I am trying hard not to turn into a crazy bird lady which I have been warned is not far away from my current status lol

Hi Tweetea,
Welcome to the Aussie thread. There is nothing wrong with being a crazy chicken lady there is alot of us on here and a couple of crazy chicken men too. People who aren't into poultry or anytype of bird really don't get our love of them and to me that is their loss. Tell us about your animals and what you have. We love to share and hear of others animals too..

Hey all. Thanks for the information. I haven't found anywhere in Australia that has JG. But they are supposed to be great meat birds

Maybe we should breed our own lol.

Love the kids play pen Satay.

How goes the snakes and quails !

Gotta run. My Christmas work party is on today.

Hey Sam,
The snakes are going well and finally eating well again after their winter break. The quails are laying up a storm average 10 eggs a day. I have the first lot of their egss due to hatch in the incubator next week. Now behave yourself at that party Sam. No dancing on the tables after a few to many or if you do remember to post pics so we can all have a giggle ;):p

Hi All, welcome to newbies. About 7 months ago, (as Satay knows) I incubated 5 of my cochin (Pekin) eggs so the line of my beloved 12 yr old rooster would continue. 5 days later my Pekin went broody so I let her sit on 4. I posted previously pics of all 9 who hatched successfully & hen took over raising them all. Well, I ended up with SIX roosters out of the 9. I intended to keep two to carry on from old Ollie who is still going very strong - long may he reign!

So I had wittled down to 4 of the young roosters and was deciding on which two to keep. Now as you know, I have Precious who is only 3 wks old & I find Cochins VERY hard to sex but my question was answered the other day in a rather wierd way! You know the story of this rescued "embryo" chicken. Precious just thinks I am her mum & I basically cannot move without her scooting along behind me. As I work from home, my computer desk is her "yard" & she cuddles up on the keyboard or my shoulder or sleeps on my hand even while I type.

Well much to my horror she/HE dashed out from behind my laptop the other day & MATED!!!!!!!!!!! my hand!!! He is 3 wks old! Now obviously this behavior ( Yes has happened again) is being strongly discouraged & I will introduce him to Bilbo (2wks older asap) but it meant I had yet another rooster & one I am VERY attached to. Obviously the feeling is mutual!

So today I sent off all bar one of Ollies boys. I have not kept the best one breed wise, I kept the one who is still subservient to Ollie & is nice to his hens.Saying that he is pretty lovely Orange body, grey tail & grey leg feathers.
PECIOUS UPDATE PHOTOS- trying to keep life slightly normal for HIM! Bathing in his platter on my coffee table.

Lol thats hilarious! I had a pair of lorikeets and the male (we called him romeo) had the same attraction to hands. My cockateil would make love to a stick in front of the mirror, and my chooks are normal.

Good luck making the final selection to keep with Ollie ;)

Omg I nearly fell of my chair laughing that story is hilarous.Shame you didn't get any pictures.I have a little cochin (i call them that too pekin seems wrong to me lol)Though they are so small compared to my large fowl cochins. He is 5 weeks old. He is black with a tan bib, I let him out of the baby pen then other day as i wanted to move the welsummers in there and no he was having none of it. He busted out of the banty pen and ran all the way back to the baby tractor prob 1 acre away or so. So we spent the next few hours taking him back and him busting out In the end he won and is now in with the wellies even though they are almost bigger than him now. lol.
