Yes I am aware that they only become SQ once they actually have been proven to be so ( by winning in the ring etc ). I have seen people selling chicks as SQ at ridiculous pricing and just feel sorry for those who are unaware of what they are really buying. But as long as they are happy with them I suppose.lol.

Yes Michael

you talk exactly how my dad see's the whole poultry thing. Although, he is not all that into and therefore doesn't really care much for it but yes he tells me to just 'make' what I want. Like how can the standard be 'right', it's just the opinion of a small group of people who decided this is how a chicken should look and from there more ( followers ) decided, "oh yeah, they are right, that is what a chicken should look like".
I plan on breeding my White Leghorns to be bigger and increase laying, because this is what I want.lol.

LOL chicken Nazi's. I am actually a bit reluctant at times to post on FB because of those narrow minded, this is how WE do it, so it must be right sort of people just jump straight down my throat.

Just yesterday I saw a guy have a real go at a young chicken enthusiast ( one of my friends ) who was only 14 years old. Then they complain that no one wants to get into chickens and that newbies are doing it all wrong. It's because you don't help them....you just shut the down

Oh Lucas, don't take it to heart

. Some people have nothing better to do.

I have seen some pretty amazing chickens bred from being as far away from any standard as possible Lucas. I would not get too bent out of shape over it.

If you are doing this for money, it's probably the wrong reason. If you make money to help along the way then 'pure breds' is going to fetch the highest amount per bird. In my limited experience, most people want interesting reliable back yard layers. They don't fetch as much but could sell them pretty much every week.

An example of a non standard bird I like, and would love to take on as a project some day, Isabel Welsummers, maybe even a different breed.

Some amazing EE's out there too and they are all just mutts

.

Well I already have my Yoko's and White Leghorns and my WLH's seem to be quite popular.

You can also get Isabel in Leghorns. To me the colour is not that amazing but yes defiantly interesting and different. I will check out those Isabel Wellie though.

I found this on www.backyardchickencoops.com.au I have been using it - smells great, seems to work so I thought id share !

Natural Homemade Coop Cleaner: Orange & Vinegar!

Although it may be a bit more time consuming to clean your chicken coop using all natural ingredients due to the preparation time necessary, the benefits are egg-eptional!

Did you know, cinnamon oil kills mosquito larvae and vanilla beans repel flies, mosquitoes and other insects! The best part is, these are all natural! Vanilla-cinnemon Chicken Coop Cleaner: Orange Peel and White Vinegar!

Ingredients:

smile.png
Four oranges (or six limes, four lemons or two grapefruit or a mix)
smile.png
Two cinnamon sticks
smile.png
Two vanilla beans
smile.png
Bottle of white vinegar Two canning jars with lids White vinegar is a natural disinfectant. It has antibacterial properties, kills mold and is also an ant repellent. Apple cider vinegar, while great for adding to your chickens water and drinking yourself for all its health benefits, shouldn’t be used here – only white vinegar. Apple cider vinegar will attract fruit flies.

Once everything has been mixed in together, set the jars in your pantry, or any cool dark place to ‘age’ for a few weeks. Shake the jars every few days to reinvigorate the contents. When ready to use, strain the contents into a spray bottle to use full strength or pour into a bucket and dilute with water.
