Eggs? Of what do you speak?

5 x chickens, 0 x eggs for 4 x months ... for various reasons.

I do not have chickens; I have chicken impersonators

Aaaw, thank you Satay, that is very sweet of you.

I am kind of used to buying eggs again for baking but not sure if I will ever get used to buying eggs to cook up and feed back to the chickens lol

I am not too fussed, to be expected I guess when you have assorted bantams renowned for their broodiness not their egg laying abilities, comes with the territory but I still love them to bits! :)

Definitely an argument in favour of chicken-math though "but this one might lay eggs" lol :)

I have decided that if/when they do start laying again, I am going to keep a chart on how often they lay, not for egg production reasons but just to see how many eggs they lay before they go broody again. With Cilla, I am thinking about 10 eggs and then she will turn

Well, at least I'm not alone in having no eggs. I'm still waiting for the first one.

However, two of my pullets may have squatted for me today when I put them down after chancing letting them free range for the first time today.

These pics were taken with my phone so they are not great. The white pullet on the right only had a red stripe on her head and now has a unicorn like comb pointing backwards.

What is this & why do we not have one for our coop?

Mmm, this looks like a good place to hide an egg.

The comb sounds normal during a heavy moult. As long as no one is showing signs of illness you should be fine. A little vegemite is fine from time to time just not to much as it's very salty. You may have to wait til spring for eggs. Mine have dropped off now but still getting a few. I haven't bought an egg in 7 years but lucky I have so many. I boiled up eggs for the girls for a treat today.
Hi Satay ... and thanks for your input here. Much appreciated. They all seem well. Mandy has the squits, but then that's absolutely NOTHING abnormal for her - she's been doing that for the past 14 months or so. But she waits until she is outside before letting go. !!! Her overnight 'doings' seem quite normal. Nothing 'squitty' about them.

Will most likely go to an Avian Specialist vet not far from here, and get worming tablets. They hate the water with worming mixture in it. Won't drink it at all - even in summer. But will wait until Molly has a bit more feather covering on her before giving it to them all. She is finally sitting again, so the pin feathers are blossoming out I would imagine. So glad to see her resting properly at night.

Will just have to wait until Spring - or what 'they' think is Spring !!

Take care,

Cheers ......... AB.

AB welcome back, while things are slow on the egg front I would worm them . The pale combs and drop in egg production might just be more than just moult related. This link explains some of the possible symptoms.

Thank you Fancy ... for your suggestion and input. I am going to an Avian vet next week, to get some worming tablets. My little girls HATE the water with worming mixture in it, and won't touch it even in summer. Will wait though until Molly RIR is a little more robust with more good feathering on her. Poor wee girl - at least I found her sitting down to sleep last night ... the pin feathers obviously are not worrying her like they were. And that was a nice relief to see. Will have a look at the link too .... many thanks.

Cheers ..... AB

Hi

.
Yes that comb problem sounds normal to me.
I too had to buy eggs the other day. Just felt ridiculous that I had all these chickens back home and wasn't getting any eggs.lol.
I reckon you'll have eggs before Spring, especially if you have younger birds.
Yes Vegemite has Vitamin B in it which is normally given to sick chicks but would also help keep pullets and hens healthy

Wow, that's harsh. I only have 8 hens that should be laying.
Hi Luke ... thanks for your post. Seems alien to have to buy eggs ?? So will wait until Spring, but meantime - once Molly RIR has a bit more feathering on herself, I will be worming them with tablets from an Avian vet not far from here. They all hate the worming mixture that goes into water. Should also grate up some garlic I guess, to keep them going between bouts of tablets.

Seems everyone is 'eggless' these days. It's turned very cold down here ( Victoria ) now, and winter has set in with a vengeance. Doesn't seem to bother the chooks as much as it does me.!!

Cheers ...... AB

Lol.....and I thought I spoilt my birds!

My guess without seeing a close pic of the white unicorn is a cross with a 'rose comed' bird. Something like a Wyandotte, Seabright or Hamburg maybe?

LOL I used that excuse a few times I am sure :) My aussie is the worst at going broody.. She has babies, lays for a bit then goes broody again don't start me on the bantams they are more broody than not. Lucky they are cute :)
