Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

My dogs do really well with our chickens - granted they are all smaller breeds, but one is Border Collie x.

They have all learnt that chickens are not there to play with. I can free range my chooks with no worries about the dogs harassing them, only eating their food if the door is left open!

Hi. Just barging into a conversation here. I have 2Jack Russell x foxys and they don't chase the chooks. My girls all free range every day. They will run through the girls and they think that is fun. Phantom (5) will chase them from the house when they venture inside or up the stairs. Mia (2.5) will dance around a chook and yap and bark at it until the chook chases or even looks at her. It's very funny to watch when she runs away with her tail between her legs watching behind her. Phantom will sometimes go into the pen and nick an egg, but not every day. I don't miss them when I get 8 - 10 eggs every day. The cats also leave the chooks alone after getting too curious and a peck on the face for their troubles.
When the lady next door visits with her dog we have to either tie him up or put them away as he chases them. It's no problem really I just put them away an hour or so earlier than normal.

Yes it's always a worry when visitors bring their dogs. My cats are scared of momma hens. Ever seen a cat to acrobatics?

Sure have. only thing is I never have my phone or camera handy. Sometime the kids and I are rolling around laughing from cat and/or dog adventures.

Having 6 indoor cats, I get to see acrobatics on a daily basis!

Agreed! I never have the camera or phone handy when they do hilarious things! Or by the time you get it, they stop :( lol

I saw the funniest thing last night .. so wish I had a video! Note: it is only funny because no-one got hurt. I will try and explain ....

Cilla, rather chubby Pekin Cochin, always positions herself on the edge of the nest box as a launch platform to the roost which she now struggles to get to. Last night, Dusty, Bantam Langshan, is standing in the same nest box.

Cilla jumps on edge of nest box > nest box overbalances, Dusty gets 'thrown' out onto the 'balcony' and Cilla ends up underneath with straw and nest box over her.

Worried for her safety, I quickly got her out from under and then seeing that no harm was done, aside from a dented pride, I couldn't stop laughing! She was OK; I put the nest box back as it should be and she used it as a launch again.

Modifications have since been made to accommodate Cilla's vertically challenged physique

im planning on getting a new breed of chook this spring and i have three breeds that i want. so can you guys help me narrow it down to one breed? so if you have any pros or cons please tell me :)

im wanting:
- lavender perkins because i love the lavender colour and their biggness.
- Bantam cochin also because of their biggness and the colour range
- Wyandotte because i love their laced feathers and the colours

im not wantting anyof these breeds for a certian thing (like eggs or meat) but just cos' i want more chickens!! :D :D
i will also need to find an aussie breeder that has these breed so i can buy fertile eggs of them.

Wouldn't a bantam Cochin be a small Cochin? I'd go with the Wyandottes, because I love the pictures of @Fancychooklady 's SLW's.

My black cat ' Bella ' was traversing between the the hay shed and the house and momma hen felt that she was too close to her chicks. Momma took matters into her own hands and jumped on the cats back. Bella did a somersault , landed and ran back into the hay shed. It was definately a ' tenna ' moment.
