Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

My oldies are dropping like flys.. Yesterdays casualty was amazon my malay game. I am not sure of her age as she was given to me about a month after I moved here, The neighbour had her for a few years and she was given to her as a full grown chicken so my guess would be that she was anywhere from 9 1/2 up.. I found her passed right under a tree she used to love to sit under during the day. R.I.P big lady

I'm planning on keeping a Bantam Rock roo out of this next hatch (my first rooster), I hope he won't turn out nasty.
I guess Sunday can't come soon enough for you Fancy.

Sorry to hear Satay, that's a pretty good innings though.
Luke, Maize is a Wheaten dark olive egg layer so she gets her pea comb from the araucana in her :)

I always give the chicks medicated feed for the first 6 weeks. If your broody and chicks are not in with the flock there is no harm in the broody having amprolium.
If anything it may help her build immune system. Generally it's not recommended that layers have access to amprolium, yet the tub I have says ' no withholding period ' on eggs. Either way Broodiies don't usually lay for 4-6 weeks.
There are two chains of thought on this, one is medicate in the hope of building immunity and the other is not to medicate until you have a cocci outbreak.
Acv , garlic and herbs may lessen the incidence of cocci but if you get a full blown outbreak of cocci you will need to resort to amprolium.

Amprolium is a thiamine blocker and shouldn't be used for a prolonged period of time. Amongst other neurological conditions thiamine deficiency can lead to wryneck.
Hi Fancy, just wanted to bring this back. I read the info on the chick feed Ive got and it says the medication "contains Monesin sodium at 100mg/kg to aid in the prevention coccidiosis", nothing about amprolium??
Also, your chicks can still contract cocci even if they are on medicated feed, it's just a prevention.
Ive heard conflicting stories about ACV preventing cocci but it's never been tested so you can't really know.

Fancy - glad to hear king George is ok!

Satay - sorry to hear you lost another oldie, that is a darn good run for a chicken, she obviously had a good life to go so long.
