Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Well I found my answer here:

http://www.raising-chickens.org/medicated-chicken-feed.html

Monesin sodium is just another type of coccidiostat.

Now I want to find out if feeding it to my adult chickens is a good idea...and I'm guessing not.
Hope my feed store has non medicated feed.

EDIT: I think it's ok to eat birds that have been fed with a Monesin sodium mix, but not for laying or breeding birds....according to Canada anyway.

JUST A WARNING:

Do not allow dogs, horses, other equines, or guinea fowl access to formulations containing monensin. Ingestion of monensin by these species has been fatal.
This goes for all medicated chicken feed.

I know my dog likes to eat. So keep it away from your dogs

Here are our new girls ... only a few days old ... just a quick update on our white leg horn boy aka killer the neighbours were upset that we re homed him , they loved his crow ...

Instanaps - so cute! Killer - lol. I'm in no rush to ever have a rooster, as much as I love chicks.

I'm sorry for your loss Satay.

I noticed that Hedwig was sleepy & fluffing a bit so I ordered amprolium & some terramycin for emergencies & just in case. There was a bit of blood from one heap of night droppings that I could see had seeped into the clean wood chips yesterday morning so I dewormed yesterday while waiting for the emergency stuff to arrive. I cleaned the poop up so I could see what was going on this morning & no blood. Hedwig looks fine. Could it have been a bit of normal internal shedding or worms? Okay, I admit I had been giving the run a light hose down for a few days in a row to keep the dust down before I realised I could be creating the perfect environment for cocci. It's back to as dry as a bone, but from what I've read, birds don't recover without treatment which is why I'm thinking it must have been something else.

Snowy is doing a good job sitting & has 7/8 days left.

After my scare, she is on medicated chick feed now.

This is the one I bought the 20kg bag of the other day http://www.thevellagroup.com.au/Technical%20Sheets/Technical%20Sheet%20Chick%20Starter.pdf

It has something called regano it seems, a natural coccidiostat with no withholding period. It doesn't say if it's okay for older birds or not but it guess no express warning and details regarding egg withholding means it won't hurt them

Hi Fancy, just wanted to bring this back. I read the info on the chick feed Ive got and it says the medication "contains Monesin sodium at 100mg/kg to aid in the prevention coccidiosis", nothing about amprolium??
Also, your chicks can still contract cocci even if they are on medicated feed, it's just a prevention.
Ive heard conflicting stories about ACV preventing cocci but it's never been tested so you can't really know.

Lucas, monesin sodium is a polyether antibiotic . I'll stick with amprolium, the lesser of two evils . Yes by feeding young chicks medicated feed , you are attempting to help them build resistance to the Protozoa . By lowering the the PH in the gut (acv) , it is said that it makes the hosts gut less hospitable , once again if you have a cocci outbreak , best to treat it quickly.

I think you'll find that it is just a ' play on words ' it's herbal so I'm guessing it's oregano oil. There are quite a few herbal remedies being used in poultry. I would say it's perfectly safe for all your chickens but whether or not it actually works I don't know.

I'm not sure. Have you wormed her lately? Thing I would be most concerned if it was me was the fact she is not eating but drinking lots.. Perhaps a kidney problem? Hopefully someone will have some good advice for you.
