Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

We've got 9 light sussex eggs under our light sussex at the moment.
We did buy a dozen, but I have given 3 to a workmate who has put them under her langshan bantam :D

We didn't expect our LS to go clucky so soon... If at all... But I guess hormones got the better of her!

The only problem being we have younger chickens we were hoping to introduce to our LS and new hampshire soon, but obviously they won't meet her most likely for another 3 weeks!!!

I'll be quite interested to see all the little LS as they hatch and grow!

HELP........Need some advice from experienced hatchers.

Today is day 21. Nothing happening yet that I can see. We just let the chooks out for the morning so our broody got off the nest and we held my mobile phone torch next to the eggs without touching them and could see that they all had very large air cells.

Now here lies my problem. These are long distance shipped eggs, two were broken during transit (which I discarded) so it wasn't a gentle flight. I rested them before setting. One of the air cells I have just seen is lying across the top of the egg rather than up the big end like the rest of them.

Do I trust it to the care of my silkie or should I take it out and put it in the incubator in an egg carton to get the air cell up to the correct spot?

I do have one in there that I think stopped developing around day 14 but I'm not sure which as I can't see my pencil mark anymore. Not sure if it's this one or not.

EDIT
Having given it some more thought and searching detached cells my thought is to leave it with the broody. One because my incubator has a 0% success rate so far and secondly because part of the air cell did extend up into the large end so hopefully that gives it enough to hatch. Would this be sound logic? Lol

Same as apps I too live smack dab in the middle of suburbia and two hatches at one time is getting pretty close to my accommodation limits. Sadly, I can only keep one bubby total from both hatches. Having to rehome the bubbies is heartbreaking. So, for a while at least, broody breaking is going to be option one

Vendetta those hormones definitely do rule!

appps I wish I had some good advice for you but sadly, I am not able to help. I do not candle at all. I have a no-touch policy with my hatches. I give the gals the eggs and then step aside. The only time I touch them is to take out any that have been broken and I have only had one break. The only reason I knew it was broken was the break was visible when she hopped off the nest.

Tina's eggs were shipped a fair distance and got stuck in the Post Office over the weekend. I took a huge chance giving her 5 of the eggs because a couple were borderline on the day 10 from being laid. Only two of the five hatched (not surprised) but she is so very happy with her babies and that is what counts.

While I know some people do not agree with my que sera, sera method I would rather trust the broody and mother nature than interfere and maybe make things worse. Those are just my thoughts and I am not hatching out pure breds or possible show champions just giving into wannabe mummas

Having said that, I have helped a littlie in the past by moistening the membrane when it was struggling to get out and it survived.

Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to help you.

I will be thinking of you today and have everything crossed that you have some good news very soon

Telia I really do not know how you are going to narrow it down to just one when deciding who to keep! I can already see myself caving and keeping any extra girls above the three we are planning to keep (mind you I might yet get all boys lol)

Yep I'd leave it with the hen. Keep an eye on it and if it pips at the wrong end , then it's time to step in.

I agree with Fancy. Unless your incubator is set up and holding correct temp. But you said you had no luck with it previously. Just leave it under the broody girl. We are all sending good chicky karma your way!

appps I also have no idea how I am going to narrow it down to just keeping one! It is so hard!

I am hoping that the decision will be made for me in that I cannot keep roosters.

Out of the two Tina has I do sort of have a favourite, the little grey one. If Tina gets to keep one of hers then poor little Blondie does not get to keep any and visa versa. However, I do think that Tina will probably be more upset at losing all of her bubs than Blondie will be. Before Tina had even laid her first egg she ‘adopted’ little LuLu when she was introduced at 3 months old. She cuddled up with LuLu at night and even caught and shared bugs with her.

Blondie, on the other hand, is a bit of a princess and it is all about Blondie! I have a sneaking suspicion that when the time comes to cut the cord on her bubs she is not going to have a problem with it .. much like Her mum!

Anyways, time will tell and way too early to be stressing about it.

Today is all about you and hopefully some good news very soon!
