Thanks Appps, her gurgling raspy breath eased to a pant and I finally managed to get her to take a few mouth fulls of cold yoghurt. As long as there are no secondary effects from heat stroke I think she made a narrow escape

Thank goodness for the cool change (and air conditioning) I'm glad I don't have a whole flock of black chickens dispite my love of Australorps!
I have a lot of Aussies and they do quite well in the heat. We have had 3 weeks of over 40c (not all at once) and they still get out and free range in the hot sun. I only learnt recently that the Australorp actually came to be(invented) at the Gatton University. 20 mins down the road from me. So they should be as a breed fairly heat tolerant I would think.

Yeah we had one years ago and don't remember ever having a problem with her, or the others either to be honest.

I wonder if its because its so up and down the weather? Like if it was hot then got extremely hot they wouldn't notice so much but these jumps from 25 one day 45 the next isn't giving their systems a chance to get used to the heat slowly.?

Could be appps. I have been worried about the young Welsummers in the heat as they are meant to be a more cold tolerant bird. So far they are handling the heat ok.

Most Chicken breeds first originated from the extreme hot a humid climates of Asia, the Mediterranean, Africa and India and even though all the breeds now a days have been crossed so far away form their original ancestors (if you want to call them that) they can still tolerate extreme heat, so don't under underestimate the power of you girls. Also when your hens pant really heavily it is their way of "sweating", its the same with dogs , because of their feathering they cant perspire so they pant to cool down and eating heats the body up so even if it's a cool food your girls may not want to eat.

I am not saying you should just let your girls sit in the heat, on a really hot day it is a great idea to give them ice cube to cool their water but you don't have to tend to them every second of the day and make your self be uncomfortable by worrying about them.

Quick question. If my chickens had mites or lice what would they look like?

Twice today I've held the rooster and both times noticed a tiny pin head size black insect of some sort on me afterwards.

Could be coincidence but only ever seen them within half an hour of holding him so suspect not.

Would this be a mite or lice? Sort of too small to get a good look at it.
