Thanks Wooklet. More great names! North-West where? -Wa, NSW, Qld???
Sorry, no chicks from my ladies, I don't have and don't want a rooster.

Hi Mycena 86, wouldn't you guess I wrote that in a hurry! I live in North West Tassie - you are in the South aren't you? And with the chicks, that was a message for Ma Noob who has just had a good hatch from her incubator. I am good at confusion!!

Had a look what pellets it was, its breeders choice cat litter, its really light weight and made out of recycled paper products and its chemical and somethign else free (cant remmeber:confused:)

here is the web page anyway http://www.breeders-choice.com.au/

Im
up to 8/10 hatched now. And one more it hatching. I have one last egg that was one of the first that went in, im sure it was ok, but nothing is happened, and when i have had a listen i cant really hear anything, and im noticing that the egg is feeling cooler and not holding its warmth. I think i will let this last one hatch then i might crack it open.

But if thats the only one i loose im happy with that. Out of 11 i had 10 that were fertile and 9 that hatch, Im happy with that

Thats a great hatch rate. Its always sad when some get that far but dont make it... Survive of the fittest kind of sucks sometimes.

I have had things made very easy for me. I went out just a little while ago to look at the three ducks I was taking to the show tomorrow and found all three to be 95% clean. Its getting late to be washing them now- so I think they will just go as they are. I didnt mean to leave things so late- but with longer daylight hours now there is just so much to do. Hope they are still looking good in the morning.

Hoping you do well in the show today Ducky.

Well I went on a candling expedition last night... looks like some of my broodies aren't serious yet, they'd perched for the night. I was distracted and lost count but I think I have around 16 developing eggs out there altogether. Today's job is to sort broody accommodation out for each serious hen so I can shift them tonight. I have one hen sitting on eggs in various stages of development so looks like I'll need to fire up the 'bator to deal with the staggered hatch. One tiny hen is only sitting on two developing eggs so hoping she'll adopt some extra babies when hers hatch.

HI Everyone,
I have 2 hens 14 weeks old. WE did have another hen which went Rooster on us and because we are in suburban area. We unfortunately had to send her to a farm luckily only 5 minutes away. My 3 year old cried his eyes out when she left.

My question is we got these 2 new ones from a market and were told they were healthy etc. Within 5 days I thought one was going to die. Was sleepy not moving gasping for air noticed what appeared to be worms. Treated for worms immediately. She is now running around is alot better. But she is still wheezing now appears to be sneezing and this morning I there was a lot of blood in the stools. I have been cleaning out house everyday, and changing water everyday.
Can anyone please help? Could it be Cocci??

If so does anyone know the best treatment?

Thankyou,

Orchid1975

Well I have just looked up Cocci, looks like according to pictures I have just seen the red in the stools is normal as it is not blood clots.

However I am still worried about the wheezing and sneezing all other behaviour is normal. Running, eating, drinking tail feathers up.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated??

Thankyou,

Orchid1975

Hi Orchid 1975, Others more expert will probably have other ideas!Where are you? Australia or America? Chickens can shed intestinal lining, but that would look more like little red lumps than a lot of blood, but I would always be wary of any sort of red in droppings, and treat accordingly. I use Baycox now,but you would have to get that from a vets, otherwise do you have aproduce store near you? Used to be able to treat with Sulpha Quin, but that is now prescription only. Those are the only 2 that I have used, so others may be able to tell you what else to get, that's why I asked where you are. As to the sneezing etc., the stress of being at the market, then another home could have brought on a respiratory infection or a simple cold, but whatever,I would isolate them from the other chickens for at least the next ten days. Keep them warm, but don't feed anything other than their pellets. Cocci feeds on protein,so if they have that as well,it would be best just to give them their seed.
Hope this helps! Good luck with it. Keep us posted. There is a Medical help section on the website, but think it is American slanted - but you would probably get expert advice there.

Ducky , good luck at the show.

RBF,glad you have found some fertiles! Nothing nicer than Mum and chickens running around the place.

The wheezing and sneezing sounds like a respiratory issue. Some people treat but you really need to know what you've got to treat it. Otherwise you can just let it run it's course and hope for the best. Even when recovered some respiratory diseases leave the birds carriers and they can become sick again if stressed. Extreme heat or cold wet weather and predators are some things that can trigger a relapse.

I hope your birds are feeling better soon.
