Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

We had a few like that too Luke. My girls were un impressed with the floods. A lot of them were here in the 2011 floods and I am sure you could read on their faces not again lol. My yard and their house is a soggy mess. Hubby got out this morning to go back to work in Brissy. As soon as it floods and they dump water out of Wivenhoe dam they cut us all off. I know we have member on the aussie thread from Laidley. I hope she did ok in the floods.

Not me but in winter I wish I was

Have quail babies popping in the incubator a day early. Must be all this humid weather we have had.
very hot here and not much rain at all! It's supposed to be the wet season!

Hey thanks for the warm welcome guys!
Wow...it's been a month of extremes weather wise, an interesting time to start keeping chooks!
My dear husband drove me in the pouring rain to erm...aquire a couple of pallets I'd seen lying about on my walk home one day. Bless him...they were heavy and wet and dirty and he didn't complain too much as we loaded them into his nice car. Once home, I spent the next hour in the rain, changing my makeshift run and dodgy coop into a slightly more waterproof makeshift run and dodgy coop. In fact, this recent rain has made it even more rickety. I look at your homemade chicken palaces with some envy. I'm not particularly handy, and my husband even less so. However, with some more selective finds around the industrial areas where I live, I'm hoping to snag a few bit and pieces to improve the whole shebang a bit. I'll try to take a few pictures of my set up, primarily for you all to have a good laugh at. It's pretty terrible, but then chickens aren't harsh critics :)
I've basically sectioned off a run in the garden bed down the sunnier side using plastic trellis, cable ties and garden stakes. Because of the plants, it's too hard for them to jump/flap over most of it, but there's a few spots where every few days they suddenly remember they can get over and so I find them rummaging around in the garden. I don't mind the free ranging except they poo all over the back verandah and come inside if you leave the back door open. Note: chooks LOVE cat food!

So my first girl, GLaDOS, has laid every day since Sunday, and even over those days it's really amazing how much her wattle and comb have grown and become so beautifully rosy. Even though she's not the biggest, she's been top chook since they got home. She seems to lay quite late in the morning...between 10 and 11, so I've not heard the fabled "egg song" yet! One more tomorrow and it's vanilla cupcakes time!! :)

Sam - Hope you did't get too soggy or have any damage in the rain. It was pretty intense there for a while!
Ash - It's quite obvious that your rooster is overseeing EVERY aspect of the build...I would guess that he is foreman and you are the lowly tradie?? ;)

Is that your chook run in the background?

The first pic is of the tree on the nest boxes and in the back ground (middle far right) is a post which i where my fence line goes.
The 3rd pic is of the tree on the nest boxes and in the back ground (middle far left) is a gate which i where the other fence line is.
My whole fenced of area is about 25m x 40m, maybe a bit bigger.

Just put a mixed load of Barred Rock, Light Sussex, White Leghorn, and "surprise" eggs in the incubator.
All from my friend and former Uni lecturer Jim, who has an amazing poultry breeding set up at Ferndale near Mount Worth.
