We finished our chicken run today - it is roofed over with bird netting, but is metal wire up the sides. The babies are very impressed with it, it's almost as if it makes them feel more secure. They spent ages dust bathing and chasing each other. Then one found a witchetty grub, which was cause for a massive brawl.
I do love how pretty the anconas are, but they are a royal pain to herd anywhere. So flighty and inclined to spook every which way, whereas my silkies just sort of go where you expect. One of them just sits in my hand placidly while I pet her, and will fall asleep if I keep doing it.
My poor forefinger is SO BRUISED from doing the wire clipping:
I was also pleased to see that the barred rock cockrel will actually seek out treats to feed to the other babies. He is shaping up to be an excellent flock rooster - lucky for him, too. The silver laced wyandotte cockrel is beautiful, but there can be only one, so it's the best gentlemen who wins:
Nice looking little BR rooster you've got there.
