Feels like I'm living in a swamp!

It could be hiding out. I have had that happen when they get scared before.

Yeah I could hear clucking from the neighbours yard this morning when I went for a wander, I couldn't see her but at least she's alive, she might find her way back over the fence to get back to her friends otherwise I'll go knock on their door when they get home from work
Glad your chooky is feeling better

How's the patient today ? I've used straight honey and wouldn't recommend it. It's sticky, attracts flies and makes cleaning the wound very difficult . The medical grade honeys are carried in a gel base to help keep the wound moist. Exudate is a normal part of the healing process, but if you have excess then there are new age bandages available to help with that. We've learnt a lot about wound care ( an unfortunate fact of life , with horses ) and are very fortunate to have the help of a friend , that is a well respected wound care professional . Where as in the old days we used to get the dressings off and ' dry ' the wound out, the science is now to keep the wound moist until new skin has covered it, hence preventing ' proud ' flesh , cracking and drying out of the new covering.

I live out in the sticks so getting to somewhere which sells medical grade honey would be a challenge anyway - I haven't gone looking for it yet. Perhaps next I'm able to get to Canberra and I'll get some for my first aid kit. I am opting to continue using Terramycin, as per your suggestion. :)

I went into Goulburn yesterday (nearest beacon of civilization) and could not find thin gauze (or any rolled gauze, seriously?) at any of the chemists. So, not having anything to wrap the wound in (I used the last of my gauze on the surgery) I opted to leave the original bandage on (it was quite clean).

However, this morning she has stepped in a puddle of water my husband left in the bathroom (thanks, dude) and it is wet. I am still without gauze (my husband is picking some up in Canberra today on his way home from work - from the same chemist we got it from last time). I'm wary of leaving it another 6 hours before changing it though, and was contemplating boiling some of the cheesecloth I use for cooking, letting it dry in the sun and making a bandage from that. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Otherwise, she seems perfectly herself, super-sweet, purring at me when I hold her.

Silly birds. My husband came in last night and told us that one of ours was missing the night before last at bed check. We searched high and low before I looked up and found her on the roof of the coop. Crazy bird. Mine keep wandering into the playground of the preschool next door. The kids LOVE it - the chickens immediately regret it - especially when they realize that the 1m high (on our side) fence is 2.5m high on the other side. I usually get a phone call and asked to pick up my terrified chickens. Silly buggers.

Lol me too! That neighbour has 2 bull mastiffs, gorgeous dogs but I'm sure they'd love a feathery chew toy if she flies over the wrong part of the fence, the part she's in is right by our driveway which is nicely over grown with a tree and shrubs and blocked off from the backyard so the perfect chicken retreat really, she's a bit funny in the head though, tiniest little thing but thinks she's a rooster, and has a go at the araucana all the time lol

I have a mastiff cross and he would kiss a chicken to death maybe but thankfully not hurt one.
