Around the corner from home is drama number 2. Now it's not unusual for galahs to be on the road and fly off when a car comes near. Well not the one I saw. I pull over and hop out to see if he's ok. Nope, poor little guy has a broken wing, possibly from being hit by a car. Bloody hell!!! Not having anything in the car to put him in but an old rag, I try my best to avoid being bitten and pick him up in the cloth and wrap him up. Boy did he scream bloody murder!!
No vets open at 7 in the morning so my lovely friend has him at the moment and Wildlife Warriors will go and pick him up.

I was a bit late getting to work today, but hey, what's a Friday morning without some drama!

Add: Let it be known it was not I who hit the galah, I found him on the road in his state already, so guessing he may have been hit by a car maybe half and hour or so before I found him.
They bite hard too, the buggers. I almost hit one that did something similar - not getting out of the way of my car. Got out and he couldn't fly away. Except that I did get bitten. And his spiky little beak went right through my fingernail. I drove home with a bird chomped down on my finger and held my hand out to my husband, galah still clamped down, yelling, "OW FIX IT FIX IT FIX IT!"

We kept him for about 10 days. WIRES said they'd probably put him down and asked if I minded keeping him to see if he improved. We named him Bitey and he ran all around my house (this being before I had chickens) and thoroughly terrorized my cats (which was hilarious). We took him out every day to see if he could fly - which he eventually could. It turned out something was just bruised and he recovered on his own. Now I keep a towel and a box in my car at all times for rescuing wildlife.

Simon (husband) saw an injured duck yesterday near the Uni where he works (ANU) which was stumbling around and kept falling over. He tried to catch it to bring it home but I was rather glad he didn't - we have no quarantine areas right now that are empty and we have chicks in the house. In the end he called WIRES. :/

In other news, one of my chickens has been laying soft-shelled eggs on the perch. I don't know which one for certain but I can fairly well pinpoint it either to of of my RIRs or my barnyard mutt Queenie. The RIRs are 7 months old and Queenie is 4 years old. I'm inclined to think it's her because of her age. It's not that hot here lately, a max of 25 most days, if that and lots of rain. I'm going to add apple cider vinegar to their water in case it's stress (Simon's been doing a lot of building with power tools right in front of the coop lately and that may well be freaking them out) and while I think their calcium should be more than sufficient - I'll also add some oyster shell grit just in case. Other than that, I'm at a bit of a loss. :/ Ideas?

I'm utterly exhausted. Had to drive to Sydney today (from Gunning) to get my passport replaced because it was damaged (I'm American and need a current, valid passport to apply for citizenship). It was stressful, anxiety inducing and kind of weird. The whole consulate felt totally paranoid by Australian standards. But a long drive there and back. And now I get to cook dinner.

Phew what a morning!! First thing that happened, let the dogs out to wee, hear a chooky distress call and Domino barking. One of my chickens was out and Domino chased her down and grabbed her. Me in my pajamas burst outside screaming and yelling at Domino to "leave it" He drops her then I chase him off and lock him in Lou's paddock. Scoop her up and put her in a cage and locked her in the garage. She's still alive with a nasty gash on her bum, but pretty sure she's going to make it (if anyone could give me some advice on how to treat her wound, I'd appreciate it). I head inside to finish getting ready for work, come out and treat her wounds and fed her my breakfast of porridge and honey which she ate happily. Feed Lou and the boys, head to the car and on the way to the station. No time for breakfast for me! Around the corner from home is drama number 2. Hey K, sounds like we both had hectic days. We had our mare scanned this morning , raced to the airport to pick up chilled seamen from WA only to be told that it was still in Melbourne airport. The vet was very obliging and came back to AI her this Arvo. Hopefully we didn't miss the ' window of opportunity. ' been a long day. This link on using glue should be helpful. If you have Terramycin spray it liberally . :) https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/super-glue-wounds

Good morning folks, it’s the weekend BYCer!

And, to make it worse, not only is work making me earn my pennies during the week, I have to work next Sunday on site! Can’t complain though, it pays the bills and buys chicken treats
wink.png

As per usual, forgive me if I miss anyone or get things wrong, doing the cut and paste thing again!

cwrite I am sorry to read of Stampy; how is she doing?

tandykins Mr Lamington is very handsome and I love his name; he does look like a lamington
wink.png

Love the breakfast-club pics! I remember when I used to be able to eat breakfast or lunch in the garden without having four vocal gannets dancing around .. I wouldn’t go back to it though; love my gannets!

Love the baby pics and for what it is worth, yep the first one looks like a roo to me also, but take that with a grain of salt, chicken sexing is definitely not my forte’.

Great news on Bumblebee; kudos!

Nu2chooks15 I would have no idea how many hours I have spent just sitting in the garden, talking to and watching the gals and I love how they talk back and each have their own little chickenality. I am not an expert on what ails chickens, chicken breeds, chicken genetics etc but I do believe I know a great deal about chickenalities

Your gals looks like they are settling in well. Looking forward to hearing about that first egg!

sweetbeak Coco is a stunner! Any news on that egg?

ChristieB having four bantams (and hopefully more soon
wink.png
) I can also vouch for bantams being tough little munchkins!

That picture of little Cho next to the Light Sussex is adorable! She is tiny!

Ashburnham as always, beautiful birds!

AussieChics sorry, not going to take a stab on whether that little one is a rooster or not

Howdy Kooka and Welcome!

Steampunked we definitely do need to have eyes in the back of our head when it comes to chickens. Glad to read that your little rooster survived the night in the big outside world and in Owl territory to boot!

C8yJayne love the Broodzilla! Looks like you got lots of great advice on moving her and having a Broodzilla of my own who has drawn blood, I go with AussieChics suggestion of welding gloves
lau.gif

collingwood nice to see you here … go the Roo Boys! Lol

Fancy as I was reading/catching up, I was thinking how nice it was to be reading lots of good news and then I got to your post ...... I am so very sorry to read about your little Coro chick
sad.png

It was definitely better news to read that your abattoir rescue is doing well and relocating to Queensland .. make sure you pack him an umbrella, a raincoat and an air conditioner!

Good luck with the AI, I hope it is successful

K Spot wow, that is definitely not a good start to your day but I am glad you saved the Galah, I would have done the same thing, some things are more important than work and being a few minutes late is not going to kill anyone; unless you work in Emergency
wink.png
. How is your injured girl doing?

Sam sorry to hear that you have been unwell, welcome back and I hope you are feeling better.

News from Bambrook Bantams?
Again, not much!

No broodys! Always a bonus!
Blondie and Cilla have both started laying again; Cilla’s eggs are so tiny .. cute. Apparently Dusty’s bad days still far outnumber her good days and she still has no qualms telling me about it.

Cilla gave an encore performance of her rooster impersonations and had another crowing attempt during the week, I do believe she is practicing to take the show on the road!

With all the rain we have had of late, some run renovations were carried out last weekend and rather than a flat topped, shade cloth covered run which collects water, Hubby and I (well I thought I was helping but probably just got in the way) turned the flat top into an A-frame and made a rain coat for it. Now we have run-off.

The gals do have lots of places to shelter from the rain, but when it rains solidly all day, they don’t get to do much except shelter.

Now, if it is going to rain all day, I can pop the rain coat on the run and they will be able to scratch around and stay dry. Of course, since doing that, we have had not much rain

So, things cruising along nicely, no news is good news!
Time to check out Gumtree to see if my new gal(s) are making an appearance and then off to Vote, oh joy!
I have not had a chance to spend a day in the garden with the camera, might just have to do that this weekend.
Take care and happy chickens

Hi Teila,

Stampy is laying on and off. We found an odd shaped egg this morning, but the shells have improved with me going back to layer feed and offering crushed egg shells. They also have grower feed so I'm just hoping for the best with the younger pullets for now.

K Spot - hope your chook recovers ok & lucky galah that you happened by.

It's been a hectic week with two kids changing schools and getting used to new things and a much longer school run. It was all good until yesterday when I arrived home from the school run to find a bulldozer mowing down the trees in a straight line towards my back fence. I have no words for how distressed I was yesterday. Now I just want to move. Before we bought here I checked the FINAL plans for the development and the strip behind our home was going to remain as a nature corridor. It turns out that FINAL means nothing when the developers realised they could squeeze in a few more houses on a tiny strip of land so all the environmental ethos is complete bullsh*t because all that they have left are the areas that will flood or are for runoff.

I am going to fight this but most of the trees are already gone.

Anyway, I'll be slowly reducing my flock as I prepare to move. It may take a while but it's just a matter of time.

It leaves you feeling hollow. Unfortunately you cannot control what happens outside your boundary, and we are constantly reminded that it is just ' progress '.
It scares me to think what this place will look like in 20 years, stick to your guns but don't let it rule you. Sad that you have to reduce your flock. Chin up mate.
