Question...if you are setting eggs in an incubator do they have to all be set on the same day? I have some potentials arriving next week....can I put them in with the eggs that are already incubating or do i have to wait for the next cycle?

You can, it's called a ' split hatch ' . I usually leave it at least 10 days between batches. That way you are not opening the bator to lift out hatchlings at a crucial time for the second set. Too many fluctuations in temp and /or humidity can create all sorts of problems.

Is this moulting season or something? I'm averaging an egg a week from 6 hens. Had to actually buy a carton today. Shouldn't this be prime laying season??

Howdy folks …. Just a quick visit, still mopping!

OMG! Rain! Wow!
It started yesterday and did not stop until approx 6pm today but more to come.

The idiot that lived here before us thought a sunken path would look nice around the house … yeah, it looks nice but not when it is a moat! We have been battling all day to keep the water out of the house; the chicken run is under water, luckily the coops are raised. The garden is a mess. Next door is higher than us and their pool is threatening to overflow.

I took the opportunity of a break in the rain to give Cilla a quick wander around; she is sitting on dud eggs and had not moved for 24 hours! The other gals spent the majority of the day in the coop, no point going outside unless they had floaties on!

And, that is nothing to do with Marcia, we have that to look forward to tomorrow but it should be downgraded to an ex tropical cyclone tomorrow morning but we honestly do not need the rain right now … I have no idea how the garden is going to cope with another deluge, it can’t soak up anymore so it just sits there.

Anyway, we are safe and my thoughts are with those up North who have lost their home etc .. so sad

Thank you everyone for your kind words re: Chimee, she is back to her normal playful self and did not require a second vet visit.

I haven’t managed to find fertile eggs for Cilla yet. A very helpful lady was travelling up this way this weekend and was going to bring some Frizzle Pekin eggs with her but the weather has put a stop to that. We are keeping in touch as she may have a friend coming up on Monday. Otherwise, I have a couple of possible options to order eggs that will be posted on Monday but I hate not having a definite plan or any idea when I will have eggs for Cilla. She is happy enough on the three duds she has but I do not want her to have to wait for much longer or she will be sitting for too long.

Anyways, we shall see; hopefully I will know something soon.

morning everyone...i would so take rain over this minus 20 plus degree cold front...and to think tomorrow will be in the 30....seems like to big of a change in temp
