I think it's the bantam ladies Teila they just come with a whole lot of attitudeHowdy folksWork interrupting my chookie-chat is becoming a bit too consistent for my liking
Sidhe13 I am sorry to read about your integration woes. If you have been following my posts [I don’t blame you if not; lots of posts to keep track of and I do tend to waffle
], I have been working on integrating my two little ones and their mum back into the flock for coming up to 12 weeks now [the day they took their first steps from the nest]. The first 5 weeks or so, they were separated from the main flock by wire; lots of looking but no touching. The next 5 weeks, above plus supervised, semi-integrated free range with an extended run into the garden and lots of looking, closeness but still no touching. The last two weeks, supervised free range with no fences but still separated during the day when in the coop etc. Granted, this has taken much time and patience but I have had no injuries and only half-hearted attempts to peck the chicks, more of a warning to ‘step away from my grub’ than anything else. Depending on how it goes this long weekend, I am looking at opening the coops and runs back into one. With my very first hatch I learnt that a broody in with the main flock is not going to work here with the set up and I have used the above for subsequent hatches and it has worked well with no injuries. Time and patience are the key. Some flocks and set-ups are just not suited to having little ones around. K Spot I am glad I do not live in the Moreton Bay Council then; “no keeping of fowl unless your land size is 800m2 or more. ”
Thanks for the link Anniebee I will suss it out; work permitting. appps the morning sun hits the side of the run beautifully here (I didn’t plan it, just worked out that way). It is so sweet to see them all lined up, catching some rays. Chooks01 Ouch! That sure is one stressful hatch day! How did it go? Deej211 sorry to read about your little ones having sour crop and hope that they are OK now. Fancy good luck in the upcoming comp. Sam nice pics but I have no idea where you are
Ash your morning visitors are beautiful! Like K Spot we also have large flocks of Rainbow Lorikeets. Just over the back of us there is a property at which the people feed the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos. Every afternoon we have hundreds of the things flying over, screeching loudly and frightening the living daylights out of the chickens. My news? Not much; actually pretty much nothing! I’m loving these colder temps; the cats and hubby, not so much; they are Frogs!! Lol As I mentioned above, integration is going well and hopefully will be over this weekend. Dusty [aka Dusty Dust Bin] looks like she may have some competition for the title of Flock Greedy Guts from KiKi who was cheeky enough to steal a meal worm from between Dusty’s legs yesterday! There is something about Frizzles, they just seem quirkier!! When we got LuLu at 3 months of age, she bounced into the flock, announced her arrival with her “if you don’t like it, get over it! I am here and I am staying!” attitude. She is such an infectious little thing with not a mean bone in her body. Crystal [smooth] is still a little timid/cautious and close to mum on free range .. KiKi [Frizzle] is anywhere, everywhere, in everyone’s face and generally fearful of nothing and no-one! She has no qualms running up to the Aunties and stealing food from their beaks!
