Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Oh I love the pic of the female King Parrot.

We have HUGE flocks of Rainbow Lorikeets and Short Billed Corellas around here. Sometimes they can be deafening with how much noise they make.

Work interrupting my chookie-chat is becoming a bit too consistent for my liking

Sidhe13 I am sorry to read about your integration woes.

If you have been following my posts [I don’t blame you if not; lots of posts to keep track of and I do tend to waffle

], I have been working on integrating my two little ones and their mum back into the flock for coming up to 12 weeks now [the day they took their first steps from the nest].

The first 5 weeks or so, they were separated from the main flock by wire; lots of looking but no touching.

The next 5 weeks, above plus supervised, semi-integrated free range with an extended run into the garden and lots of looking, closeness but still no touching.

The last two weeks, supervised free range with no fences but still separated during the day when in the coop etc.

Granted, this has taken much time and patience but I have had no injuries and only half-hearted attempts to peck the chicks, more of a warning to ‘step away from my grub’ than anything else.

Depending on how it goes this long weekend, I am looking at opening the coops and runs back into one.

With my very first hatch I learnt that a broody in with the main flock is not going to work here with the set up and I have used the above for subsequent hatches and it has worked well with no injuries.

Time and patience are the key. Some flocks and set-ups are just not suited to having little ones around.

K Spot I am glad I do not live in the Moreton Bay Council then; “no keeping of fowl unless your land size is 800m2 or more.

Thanks for the link Anniebee I will suss it out; work permitting.

appps the morning sun hits the side of the run beautifully here (I didn’t plan it, just worked out that way). It is so sweet to see them all lined up, catching some rays.

Chooks01 Ouch! That sure is one stressful hatch day! How did it go?

Deej211 sorry to read about your little ones having sour crop and hope that they are OK now.

Fancy good luck in the upcoming comp.

Sam nice pics but I have no idea where you are

Ash your morning visitors are beautiful! Like K Spot we also have large flocks of Rainbow Lorikeets. Just over the back of us there is a property at which the people feed the Sulphur Crested Cockatoos. Every afternoon we have hundreds of the things flying over, screeching loudly and frightening the living daylights out of the chickens.

My news?
Not much; actually pretty much nothing!

I’m loving these colder temps; the cats and hubby, not so much; they are Frogs!! Lol

As I mentioned above, integration is going well and hopefully will be over this weekend.

Dusty [aka Dusty Dust Bin] looks like she may have some competition for the title of Flock Greedy Guts from KiKi who was cheeky enough to steal a meal worm from between Dusty’s legs yesterday!

There is something about Frizzles, they just seem quirkier!! When we got LuLu at 3 months of age, she bounced into the flock, announced her arrival with her “if you don’t like it, get over it! I am here and I am staying!” attitude. She is such an infectious little thing with not a mean bone in her body.

Crystal [smooth] is still a little timid/cautious and close to mum on free range .. KiKi [Frizzle] is anywhere, everywhere, in everyone’s face and generally fearful of nothing and no-one! She has no qualms running up to the Aunties and stealing food from their beaks!

Some morning visitors. The Rainbow Lorikeets are a rare visitor here.
Beautiful pics Ash :) My squirty the rainbow is terrified of the wild ones if she sees one when she is out she will hide down behind my back.. She must like the mickey birds though as she can impersonate one quite well which is funny and annoying at the same time.

I think it's the bantam ladies Teila they just come with a whole lot of attitude :D A lot of people as me why I have bantams as they lay tiny eggs. I tell them it's for the personalities :D

Sour crop babies are very much improved today. Thank god. I must have caught it in time. Here is a pic of our halfhearted broody cranky pants Pepper the australorp. Getting her grump on in the nest box

Hi guys! Thanks for the support and integration tips.

Mama chook and her babies broke out of their separate area and mingled with the others again.

The 3 troublemakers were caged last night and are awaiting pickup tomorrow (it was supposed to be today but rain has delayed the trip).

I am happy to report that the remaining flock are already showing signs of improvement! They are all calmer and less panicked in their movements and this is a great sign which eases my feeling about rehoming the 3 others. I got the guilts up last night after I went to bed but the change in flock dynamics so quickly has settled that.

Good to hear the bubs are doing OK Deej211

Sidhe13 good news from you also.

I just had the most bizarre experience … I am sharing because if something does happen, it will not be hindsight.

Every day, 03:30-04:00pm without fail, the gals start pleading to go for a free range and Chimee (cat) starts biting, scratching and pleading to go into her play run outside. We cannot actually say “outside’ around her at any time and have to call it the O-word because she gets so excited. Syba does go outside into the run but does not get quite as excited as Chimee.

Today, nothing! Asked Chimee if she wanted to go outside and she ran away and hid under the bed.

OK, not that she has done that before, but wrote that off as one of those things. Then, I realised the gals had not been pleading.

Went outside to let them out; not moving out of the run! I went and got some meal worms and sat in the usual meal worm doling spot, Dusty came over but the two other big gals just ran out of their run and into the broody run with Cilla and the bubs .. no way Cilla was coming out. After two worms, Dusty left and went into the run with the others, at great speed. Eventually, after half an hour, everyone came out but they were super spooked and kept running back.

I went inside to see what the cats were doing and they were both sitting in the laundry, not usual, pretty much doing nothing.

At this point, I am starting to freak out .. what the?!

Cold? I don’t think so, as it has been like this for 3 days now and everyone was fine the last two. Also the chickens are in their run, not like they are hiding in the coop. Syba (other cat) does not do cold so sitting on the cold laundry tiles is not the norm for him.

Maybe the gals saw a Hawk (never seen one in the 5 years we have lived here) but that does not explain the cats.

If there is one of the neighbours cats around, the gals are quick to raise the alarm and they had not raised the alarm at all today.

I couldn’t see or hear anything in the garden out of the ordinary .. freaky stuff!

I went to town today and at 11am it was 2 degrees. It warmed up to 6 and the forecast for the weekend is 18 . No wonder my chooks don't know if they are Arthur or Marthur. My daffodils are already up and the camellias are flowering. Got chased out of the shopping centre with the fire alarm , only to have to go back and fill the trolley again.
Teila both my cats are asleep in front of the fire and have only been out long enough for a Pee.I hope that you don't have a dog or something more threatening hanging around. Might be best to sit with them while they are out over the weekend. My laundry/bathroom is coming along , hope to have it finished for when our daughter comes home from Perth in a couple of weeks.
