Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Sour crop in week old chicks!!! Help! Have given garlic and honey and palpatated their crops (3 of them have it) and have changed their waterer as they kept filling it with wood shavings

Unfortunately chicks don't know the difference between shavings and food . Honey and garlic won't help ! Massage the crop gently, towards the vent , keep them warm and hydrated. If you are going to use wood shavings its best to elevate the feed and water dishes on a couple of house bricks with a little ramp . I buy budgie hanging water dishes for mine.

OMG I thought I was cold the other morning but it's -1 this am at home and I'm off to work in it ! Brrrr

Fancy love the pics of your champ ! Can't wait for sept/oct. Just need dates so I can make sure im there !

Another big comp on Monday. Will let you know when we book the horses on the spirit. :) Looking forward to it.

I spoke to Steve from HenSafe, sounds like a great product, its been ordered i will let you know how it goes. i will have to modify my little eBay coop because i dont have the height required but nothing a bit of ply and silicon won't fix thats the Aussie way :)

I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, especially the solar light sensor bit! I hope to order mine next month some time.

The flock aggression has reached tipping point and tomorrow I will be less 3 chooks. I opened the coop today to find one baby chick with a bare back and bloody spots from feathers being torn out. He also has broken pin feathers that were bleeding.

He is in quarantine and the 2 red hens and the rooster are going tomorrow. I have reached my limit and this behavior will not be allowed to spread. Already today some of the juvies have been a bit rougher than usual so I am pulling the pin. The mama and her babies will be seperated for a few days and the 3 troublemakers are being rehomed.

I figure removing the 3 instigators will allow the rest of the flock to settle into better habits.

Unfortunately the injured chick is very traumatized and sore and tries to rip into me when i handle him. It is making treatment very difficult. He is very untame and this too will be rectified in coming weeks. I allowed Mama's 6 babies to be a little wilder but I am now reminded what a headache this is when it comes to handling them. So, many treats will be dolled out and affections gained.

Sorry to hear that Sid. Just make sure his quarentine area is in with his siblings so you don't go through this again when you put him back. I seperate one for 3 days due to illness and it never really got back to being part of it's sibling flock after and they all pecked at it when I put it back. I've separated one recently in a cage for a week in the same pen and it's not affected anything as far as pecking order or how it's treated.

Best of good luck Sidhe13 .... I do hope your segregating works well. And that the juvies forget what 'bad' they are learning at this time. ... I don't think chooks have much of a long range memory, at least I hope not - for your sake !

Chickens can be monsters at times. .... I can't have any more than 3 at the moment, 2 in one area,. 1 in another - as there'd be lotsa blood shed. Am thinking of expanding another ccoop and run, and maybe getting two more pullets who know one another, but that's a big IF. ... as it would mean me out there, most of the day - being umpire during free ranging ?? - and they do have to free range - when the sun actually manages to shine down here. ... Other than that, the moulting chooks are getting plenty of attention and much higher protein to help them. Poor wee souls - half feathered in this cold weather !

Maybe I will leave the decision about more chooks, until Spring !!!

Hello, I sent my instant message!
This is my reason for buying chickens last year as I like to buy my eggs locally from people's homes or from my local farmers market and I can't do that anymore due to regulations!
