Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Bad news from my place today. I lost my 3 little marans chicks over night. The brooder light blew and I had forgot to put back up bottles in for them :he. Sorry little ones. R.I.P :hit

Sorry to hear that :( Unfortunately these things happen.

I lost a chick to a Goshawk yesterday because I didn't latch their cage up properly and mother hen decided to take them free ranging out in the open.

Only thing we can do is try not to repeat our mistakes in the future.

No they aren't sharing a nest box.  Whoopi is in the brooder box alone and Squeak is brooding in one of the main nest boxes - she hasn't been separated from the others. I guess I'm just being overly cautious here. I don't think I'd put them in the same brooder pen as it's only small and Whoopi is a tiny Silkie while Squeak is a full size Dorking.  I'd be afraid Squeak would bully Whoopi, plus the chicks are going to be tiny.

Oh no!! So sorry to hear @satay
 . Hugs lovely  :hit

Thanks guys. Unfortunately my own silly mistake of getting distracted and forgetting to add the hot water bottles before bed. Lesson learn't won't make that mistake again.

To Fancychooklady .... you mentioned in a post to cwrite ... on an earlier page, the following :

" Green poop usually means starvation. I would isolate her and monitor her feed intake."

While I consider myself forever a newbie ( have only had chickens for 3 years, 2 of which died - 1) pneumonia [ my silly fault at the time, not checking coop roof leaks in storm for my Silkie ] ... and 2) my Barnevelder who simply keeled over and died one day. ) ... I do have a puzzle in the chook pen !!

My Mandy Welsummer ( THE biggest chook imaginable, and who is boss of all she surveys !!! ) .... is pooping normally - nice compact bowel, plus a little cecal poop every morning ... for only the second time in her life.

She has finished a moult, is reddening in the comb and wattle, but is not into squatting just yet. .... thing is, she has squirted green poop for her entire adult life - but only when laying. !!! ??? A previous moult saw her woopsies, normal as well. There is no way she is starving ( she's one heavy girl ) She struts with tail erect and perfect straight line back, for a Welsummer.

Some of what she squirts ( when laying - - - with phenomenal sound effects ) ... goes a foot or so - is always green, sloppy, with only a tiny hint of urate, if at all. .... Yet she does not display this kind of bowel overnight. All normal overnight - even when laying.

I do NOT dispute what you are saying ... I could not do that in any way, but have often wondered if chickens react to excitement, ( not stress in this case ) ... just sheer excited delight at being let out in the morning, and then getting on ( for her ) with the daily job of squirting hugely, laying and doing her thing. .... She is at best feisty, does not interact with me, ( not like Molly who would sit on my head if I permitted it ) ... and is somewhat aloof in her dealings with all around her. .... She does however, stick close to Mum ( me ) as does Molly, when free ranging. ... otherwise they 'free range' near their coop ( probably because of wind, and the hundreds of cockatoos we have up in the Dandenongs in Victoria ). !!!

If you wish, I would like to know your thoughts on this ... it has troubled me from time to time, yet there she is - still out there doing her 'dominant' thing, and looking like some heavy weight, prize fighter chook. ... Anyone else's input would be welcome too. .... I figure, IF she is ever going to lay again, she will do so in the next few weeks. Will be interesting to see if she resorts to the squirt business of large green poop, then. !!!

Annie there are many shades of green when it comes to poop. The other symptoms have to be taken into account. cwrite 's bird had been showing a reluctance to leaving the coop, lethargy , crop adjusting and general Ill thrift. In the final stages of life a bird will often poop bright green . Green watery poop can also be a sign of cocci but in your birds case , it may just be that she consumes a lot of greens or grass. :)
A fecal float test at your vet would tell you one way or another.
