Sorry satay ... but I simply have to ask .??? .... " the snake is tiny compared to the one's I have in the house "   ....  um - you have red-bellied snakes in your house ?    Do you keep them as pets inside a large glass crate ? and feed them 'things' ?  If so, I respect that - to each her own.

Am neither one way or the other about snakes myself - am not scared of them, but respect them, that they will defend, seek food, and bite - which can be nasty.

Although it is not permitted I know --- I would kill a brown or tiger if I found one menacing about my property, looking to kill.    My Narranderra friend is utterly horrified by this thought ... and she's the one with the snake repellent electrical gadgets, to protect her hand raised joeys.  I respect snakes,  admire them - they do what they have to do - but when it comes to them, or me and my animals / chickens ---- its no contest.  Something has to go - permanently.  It would be the snake, if possible.

Anniebee ....

No, no pet red belly's'. We have a 10ft coastal carpet snake and a spotted python. The red belly just lives on the property. While they are not everyone's cup of tea. I really don't mind it being around. Red belly's generally eat frogs and small things like couple day old Belgians. It has since moved on from the fern house.

To RodneyRooster or devinandfeather ....... or both.  ??

Hitting quote on an above post didn't work at all ... and this is only a small reply about my hubby who 'doesn't do chooks'.

I have to agree - he is actually a total softie with animals and birds, but as they are MY chickens, I am supposed to be 150% responsible for them.  And he won't have a bar of looking after them ( unless he had to of course - me in hospital or something ghastly ) .... but he has busted his innards, redoing coops, fences, laying concrete for flooring, a new coop, and everything else for the best for my chooks.   ...

So he is ( reluctantly to a degree ) very much 'into chickens' .... LOL.

He just won't admit it.  ;)  ... first thing he does when he comes home from work, is go outside with Miss Ruby and call 'took, took, took' to the girls who ignore him completely, because  - - -

he hasn't got any food on offer.   Maybe that's what has p'eed him off ??    :lau   .... I try to teach about tucker, result is zilch !!

LOL ....

Sounds like my hubby. He builds pens etc but that's about it when it comes to chickens until last year when he got hurt at work and had to get another job for 6 ish months til his arm healed. He got a job working in a produce place. Well all of a sudden he was the go to guy on what to feed etc at the store. Um hello where do you think you got your info from .... ME... :lau

On the sand eating. No it's not to be recommended, just like DE , sand contains silicon and the dust if inhaled can cause all kinds of upper respiratory problems. Builders sand or ' fat ' sand is best for use in coops. The finer stuff ( beach sand ) is likely to sit in the crop and could possibly cause impact ion.

Thanks for the info :) The sand has been taken away from them and they are now eating their chick crumble (just not with the same amount of gusto as they showed when eating the sand).

He said he doesnt hate my chickens just the roosters lol

As for the sand, Fancy has the answer one again! We are all so lucky to have such knowledgable chook folk for advice and funnies :)

Can't help with answers sorry but he is very pretty.
I have a mixed boy who has crinkly/straw feathers too and I'm curious to know why that is as he's the only one out of all my hatches that have it.

Deej211 ... I know zilch about breeding, variations, leakages etc. ..... bibbing in with a guess - that there's Welsummer in there somewhere ???

Also to :

V1cky .... same applies re Welsummer, but perhaps even more so. My Welsummer girl has beautiful golden hackles - or straw colour ?. Her wing and back feathers are 'mottled' or maybe barred ? I don't know enough about that to say for sure. She was sold to me as a pure bred.

........

Anyway, I am still in kindergarten as far as knowledge of breeding etc. is concerned. I just figure there looks like a bit of Welsummer somewhere in both these lovely boys.

........

BOTH ARE REALLY BEAUTIFUL BIRDS .....
