Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Day 12 Air sack question. I'm down to two from my shipped eggs, one in the incubator and one under penny.

My egg in the incubator has been sitting big end up all this time and egg sack seems to be where it should be.

The egg under penny the air sack is loose looking and on the side of the egg, I'm guessing as that's how it's laid on it's side under her. Do you think this is going to cause a problem come hatching? I'm wondering if I should put it in the incubator big side up instead to let it get into place before the chick gets any bigger?

Fred and Alice lol saw some of them on show at Royal Adelaide my both roosters and hens are ginormous!! Guess Fred is on his way to being a giant chicken lol

I must be the only one that did not know that. What do they treat it with now Ash?

It's a common misconception that arsenic isn't used, but as recent as 2013 the EPA still list it as registered for use in NSW.
The five treatments that are used as follows :
- CCA copper chrome arsenate
-ammoniacal copper quaternary and copper azole
-boron
-creosote
-pyrethroid and metal based light organic -solvent preservatives ( LOSP'S )

If the timber is green in colour then it contains copper.

thank you Fancychooklady for posting this info, it backs up what I have read about CCA treated pine. There is an alternate treatment I think it's ACQ? which doesn't use arsenic but still has other chemicals. It's harder to find and more expensive. I'm pretty sure I read that CCA treated pine has been banned from use in playgrounds since 2006 in Oz due to concerns re arsenic comming into contact with children's hands and skin. The Ipad isn't charged so can't check up on the facts at the mo.
The pine I bought and used from bunnings here in Perth is CCA treated pine. I went to a timber specialist who only sells treated pine and they said that yes it contains arsenic but it's 'locked' into the wood with the other fixing chemical and there is no danger of it coming out. Point of view seems depend on what's being sold

Hi All, love all the chick photos that people are posting. Congrats on your hatches! I have a quick question. The new perch I have constructed for the coop is made out of treated pine. Upon reading some posts on BYC regards treated pine I am now worried that it won't be good for the girls to perch on. :cd Am in a bit of a flap about it. When my husband asked me why I used treated pine, my answer was I was just in auto mode cause that's the wood I use for outside projects. I really didn't think about it :barnie It took me two days and a few choice words  to make, so am reluctant to chuck it and do it again. I painted it yesterday with a mix of surface spray, small amounts of eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil. Left it a few hours then painted it with linseed oil. It all has soaked right in and wood still looks dry. So should I go ahead and use it or should I paint it over with some paint? Any thoughts or advice are most welcome.
Locknest4 - - - - If you are still not happy - and it doesn't sound as though you are. ... you might like to find an old towel or three ( if you haven't any - a local Op Shop would have them - wash and dry for use ) .... and wind those around the treated pine roosts. I have towelling around all my roosts ( one being half a brick --- yes :lau on top of her laying box ) which Mindy just loves, and the other an ordinary 2 x 1 timber strut. I change Mindy's towelling frequently, but the two big girls only occasionally. As summer approaches I will do that more often, as that's when they will perch. Cold weather ( and it still has been here ) ... they huddle together for warmth in a nesting box, which is no longer used for nesting ( THEIR decision ). I notice 4 struts you have there ... hope you have a lot of old towels, or can get some. So - to prevent any nasties, even though you have treated it all so well, my thought would be towelling, wound round and round .... keeps them from getting nasties through their feet. Cheers ---
thank you Anniebee for your suggestion re old towels :)

Just a few... Gr8 pictures! I read out your close encounter of the chicken kind to my family and we all had a good laugh :) which we really needed as we sadly lost a chook today :( Henny and Gertrude Baby lorp More baby lorps! Henny again. My ever friendly Hennible Pennible. When I woke up this morning, this chook was on top of me. I felt someone crawling on me and groaned. Cat? Kid? Im trying to sleep in! Holy crapp, Its Got Claws! Open eyes! Its...A ...Chook? Henny! How did you get in! Im still not sure, how she got in....Maybe the cat door? I get up at 6am to let them out, feed everyone, then cuddle up with the kids if they arent up yet. Regina. Too broody.

Sad news- got home this arvo to find our last adult hen dead :( She was happy, healthy and laid her morning egg when we left. Found her on the ground just outside the coop couldn't see any reason why she died. Wondering if it was a snake. The chicks were nearby and they are all fine. Might invest in a few of those electronic snake repellers to safe guard the chicks. I miss her. She was the last of our original chickens.

Thats hilarious! Chook using the cat door and jumping in bed with u haha gorgeous! Great pics.

So thought Id just check.. Miss vonte has only come out once today - while i was out obviously ate and drank which was good, hope she comes out more often over the hot weekend to drink, surely she will. Anyway her poo looked normal in every way except that it was one huge clump! I would assume thats because shes only getting up to go to the toilet once and that itd be normal while broody but thought id just check, its as big as dog poo! Lol. Just looking for confirmation that thats normal?

Shes doing so well :) had more escaping chickens this morning, seems theyve now eaten all the exciting stuff in their yard over the last 2 years so theyre wanting more.. so typical of my chooks, could never keep them in a small area. Everyone tells me theyre so spoilt always having so much space but they never seem to think so!

My herbs, fruit and veggies are already going nuts this spring, theyre loving it! :)

Dude I am still traumatized. That moment when I felt someone on me and tried to roll over and felt the claws...EEK! Then opening my eyes to see her on my chest glaring at me. " I believe there is a matter of morning tea to discuss? Also, what's with the cushy roost you keep to yourself?" I exclaimed "Henny?!" And shot up, she jumped off and bolted through the house and straight out the back way where the cat door is....she hasn't done it since so I'm still a little creeped out as to how she got in.

I'm so sorry. Its always hard to lose a friend. Glad I could give you a laugh. Hennible is a constant source of amusement. If the back door is even slightly open she charges in and rolls my son for his food
