Henny again. My ever friendly Hennible Pennible. When I woke up this morning, this chook was on top of me. I felt someone crawling on me and groaned. Cat? Kid? Im trying to sleep in! Holy crapp, Its Got Claws! Open eyes! Its...A ...Chook? Henny! How did you get in! Im still not sure, how she got in....Maybe the cat door? I get up at 6am to let them out, feed everyone, then cuddle up with the kids if they arent up yet.

A priceless story .... would love to know if you ever find out exactly how Henny got inside. More to the point, that she found you to 'perch' on, in the early hours. If it was the cat door, then Henny is one very very clever chook.

My 'cat door' is just a very holy screen door. We used to leave it open, but all the chooks and Regina duck would just come in and trash the place...I put up a cardboard barrier which stopped Gina but not the chooks, so started leaving the door shut and the cats learned to jump through a hole in the fly screen. Im thinking the door must have been open a bit, because Im sure she's too fat to jump through the hole. That moment when I went to roll over to settle the possible 'cat' or 'kid' into a more comfortable position and felt claws digging into me is etched into my mind! I have also been thinking about how she found me and decided that was the spot to be....Doesnt matter which kid it is, they all find and jump on mum.

Rip and condolences locknest :-( very saddening to lose your last original, i dread the day. I agree surely a snake wouldnt just kill a full grown hen and leave those perfectly tasty little chicks alone..

Wash the eggs?!?!?! Even I (total noob!) Know that you dont wash the eggs!!!! Not for hatching or eating it loses all of its protection and preservation! Dont go back to them.

Satay I could always ask if my LS breeder would ship eggs? Could send you some of mine but of course the chances of getting pure breds arent high with mine homed together.

There is another offer for you @appps
Thanks Rodney it was appps that was looking for the Sussex. Hubby would most likely kill me if I bought another breed.... Or maybe not but I would definitely get the eye roll.

Pen pics

This is the original pen, where the gate is broken and no one is locked in. The wire was set into a small trench and buried, mother nature did the rest. Impenetrable!

Pen two or duck jail, for over amorous drakes. Didnt have time to do the dig a trench thing, had to get Abbey seperated as he is so big he almost murdered my little snowy calls. Eventually I am going to attach a night lockup to this pen, and Abbey will get a big girlfriend we can breed some meat ducks from. For now, I keep a few drakes locked up every day as my poor girls are copping it. I really prefer pen one method, but it takes some doing. Pen to is just staple gun and some heavy bits of wood.

Henny and Gertrude, hangin out at the kitchen

Gorgeous pics! Lovely green setup :)

Sorry apps and satay i obviously remembered wrong who was looking lol. Should have known from all of satays wonderful new hatches i guess!

Kleo i think its time to set up surveillance at urs too, would be so funny to watch them jump through that hole. One cat, two cat, chicken! Hahaha i can see it playing in my mind :p

Big stumpy round the fenceline. My fear of coming face to face with a snake this season has just been elated lol. I love 'tame' snakes that are harmless enough but sh*t scared of coming across them in the wild.

My roosters are currently in a crowing match. Like, full on, every .5 seconds type crowing match lol.

Satay if u were closer id swap ur broodies for egg layers for 3 weeks at a time happily lol

So I've just youtubed candling and pretty sure ill be fine with that, looks simple enough after watching a few different clips. My question is actually probably a silly one considering the whole process lol. How do I get each egg out from under her to do so without interrupting her and the eggs? Do i just lift her up and take half out, candle them, put them back and take the other half out? If i do one at a time i wont know which ive done and which i havent. And if i do them all at once shell have no eggs left!

I plan on candling for the first time at day 7 or 8. I havent read anything about when to do it tho, do does this sound ok? And then how often should i do it? Each week? Thanks :)

I take a little basket with hay in it, my trusty torch and an empty toilet roll. Get comfy, take one egg at a time, place it sideways or round end on the toilet roll with the torch beaming through the bottom end. The toilet roll helps to concentrate the light beam and makes the egg easier to handle. As you candle place them in the basket. Once you are done gently put the eggs back under the hen.

Nope chickens are notoriously dumb in that department. They will happily sit hatching nothing but straw for weeks lol

I just reached under and took all of penny's out last night and sat aside then candled one at a time, you then just pop the good ones back under.

Being your first time candling if you wait till between 9-12 days you are going to be able to easily see which ones are good and which aren't. Any earlier than that and I find myself not trusting I'm right and leaving them till then and doing it again anyway.
