Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I think buying eggs is a far safer option. With either eggs or a rooster there could be something genetically that does not show up til the chicks are born. I guess like humans you don't really know the things that could occur til you put two together. I have done both get a new roo and buy eggs, I am lucky having the space to keep new roos away from the rest of the flock. I watch them every day for any signs of illness and I would only get a new roo from someone I have met before and have seen their flock.
Bringing in eggs is the far safer option.
I keep closed flocks and only bring in new stock as eggs

xxx M,

Checked my baby's befor bed at midnight last night and one of my girls has wry neck ! Sigh ..... Gave her vegimite water and cleaned the brooder also gave her a small does of antibiotic but her poops normal and the other two are fine so after her special water I went to bed. This morning She is MUCH proved. So other than Vegemite and egg yolk. Are there any other things I can give her ( short of buying seleium and vit E

The Vegemite is great for the short term, but best to get a good poultry multi vitamin to add to the water. Polyvisol is ok in emergencies, but the birds don't like the taste. A drop in the beak morning and night if symptoms reappear. Vitamin E cap slit open and drawn up into syringe or you can just buy vit E in a bottle. Take a look at your feed, don't store feed for more than a couple of weeks and check the use by dates .

Vella chick starter. I only buy in 10kg lots and it's stored in air tight containers

I've been online to order stuff

Yeah that only contains oregano. No amprolium which is also a thiamine B1 inhibitor.
No matter how airtight your container is , after 2 weeks any added minerals and vitamins begin to deteriorate . We are guilty of holding over chick starter from previous hatches but best to buy in smaller quantities than take the risk. :)

This is the first time I ve had any issue. I usually at multi vits to water every second day. And they have grass time. They are outside now as I kept them in the brooder a bit longer due to storms and rain. Gretel has shown heaps of improve tn so praying it continues

There are definatly risks with eggs as well. I've only ever bought or will buy from someone known to have good bio security measures in place and a good healthy flock. It's one reason I've persevered with the breeder I have rather than just grabbing some eggs off gumtree.

In my case her stock actually has better genetics than my existing ones so it's improving rather than the opposite and really any genetics faults risk is no higher than is in your existing birds or the rooster you will buy as I doubt you got a genetic work up on those too? :). You just need to buy good quality eggs from a good breeder.

Councils issues with roosters is the noise. You can always try a no crow collar, a friend of my sisters is having good results so far. You just have to be prepared to get rid of it if someone complains or the collar doesn't work long term.

As for the weird stuff That's a bit of a worry. Obviously someone has decided to start playing silly buggers in your neighbourhood.

If it's a hard wired smoke alarm it will go off "I believe" because it's lost it's power connection as a warning there could be a fire causing an electrical outage.

@RodneyRooster. People candle constantly out of curiosity not any actual need. You only need to candle once around 7-10 days to get rid of any clear eggs, eggs with a blood ring or eggs that started then quit. They can be your exploders and stinkers after a few weeks.

You can then candle again on day 18 as you remove them from their cradles and lay them in the bottom of the incubator ready for lockdown and hatching a few days later. Again you are looking for anything that has obviously stopped developing earlier somewhere along the way and is dead. A lot of the seasoned incubators don't even do this second candle I believe. I'm going to mark my air sack at this last candle so I can see it's pipping in the right spot but only because I know I've got a dodgy air cell.

Any other candling is pure curiosity and serves no purpose but to quench that ;-) and possibly introduce bacteria from your hands

There is also a school of thought that has constant candling, weighing and marking of air cells all the way through. I don't "think" any of our very successful hatchers in this thread use that method??

.

I know one lady that always has between 95 and 100 percent hatch that candles and marks aircells daily. She does batches of 36 at a time.

Kleonaptra tee hee, it definitely sounds like Henny Penny has visions of becoming a pampered house chicken.

satay yeah, you cannot help but smile at their excitement .. I tell everyone I spend so much time in the garden because I enjoy it and love the feathered company; but truth be known, I probably spend so much time in the garden because it takes me twice as long to do anything as I have to be careful not to stab a chicken with the garden fork or chop off a chicken toe with the spade

Fancy I am also pleased to hear that you are up and about and on the mend. Must have felt good to see the chooks again? As you all probably know by now, my gals get a supervised free range every afternoon but because of the hubby health issues, dipped out yesterday .. when I got home late last night they were fine and had put themselves to bed etc. However, when I went out to feed them and say good morning today, I felt like I had not seem them for weeks! They really are a huge part of my day.

Sam fingers crossed for your little one with the wry neck; sounds like she is improving.

Thank you Fancy for the tip about the chick starter. I had some left over from a previous hatch, sealed in an air tight container and the chap at the feed store advised me to throw it out; not worth the risk, especially as it is not that expensive.

I do buy in small lots but had no idea that even after 2 weeks it starts to lose it’s goodness and have continued to use it for 6 weeks or more.

I do not have any hatches planned in the near future but will definitely keep that in mind.

I am one who pops the eggs under the broody; set and forget, que sera sera etc While I probably should candle, I have not and while I have had some quitters, I have been lucky enough not to have any exploders; I know my luck will run out one day.

sjturner79 “candles and marks air cells daily” .. seriously? Wow, who has that kind of free time? Obviously very dedicated
