Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hey everyone. Can i jump into this convo? I just joined a day or two ago. I am from the mid north coast of NSW. I only added poultry to my menagerie this year and now have 5 chooks, 1 mallard, 6 ducklings and 1 chick. The chickens are by far the favourites of my kids especially since the babies hatched. Looking forward to sharing ideas and learning more.
welcome to the aus sie thread lanaducky.

Wow Locknest, I didnt know they are allowed to shoot our birds in the metro. Have a workmate who has a vinyard in your area. I must ask him if he does that. It will be interesting to see how long before your others move up to the perch. Sounds like it would be a smart move to me! How many bantams do you have?

Yep, Teila Harri (ette) is a black pekin. Had another who turned out to be a roo so had to give him back (he was awesome). Comps couldnt guarantee a pekin chicks sex so i got Ruby (Tuesday). She is 3/4 a leghorn/new hampshire & the two of them are best buds. My little garden (& high density living neibourhood) could accommodate 1 more, if i could be sure it was a hen (bantam).

Hey Bethan

I hope you do not mind me sharing an experience I had in reply to your having two girls but room for three.

You may have thought of this and I do not wish to upset you or put the mockers on you but I started out with two girls [Cilla was one of them, she is my remaining original girl] and unfortunately I lost one to illness which left Cilla very sad and alone. At the time, it was difficult to find her a companion. I eventually did but sadly, we lost that one also, leaving her on her own once more. Again, I had trouble finding a companion and when I finally did, I made the decision to get two more.

As much as it is not something I wanted to think about, having three meant that if I did lose one, the remaining two would have company and I would have more time to find a replacement. Just my humble opinion but for those reasons and based on my experience, if there is room for three, I would have three.

I totally understand Teila. I didn't want Harri on her own so brought Ruby home the day i took my roo back. If anything happened to one of them i would feel so sad till i could get another (more). That could be days at the least. Ha Ha! You have given me the "rational" excuse i need to get another one. Thanks heaps :D

Hey, has anyone had a Magpie attack their chicken? I was just sitting back watching two of my girls scratching on the grass and a magpie aggressively swooped down onto my black bantams back!!!??? I jumped up and yelled at it and ran towards it and it flew onto the fence before I shoo it away completely

so I know it was definitely a magpie and I can't believe it?! My poor girls ran for their coop and are clearly still shaken up, poor little darlings

should I be concerned about magpies with my chooks or could this just have been a mistake of identity or something?

Patsy is still not delivering yet but eating up a storm. I spoke to the vets and they have given me signs to look for and to call them if I see any of them and someone will be right out. I also sent a video of Zeus to the vets to see how Zeus is progressing and his reply was he looks amazing compared to Saturday.
