Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Good morning Friends :frow

Was not looking forward to today .. Mondays are our busiest day and usually we have 2 people from 8am to 9:30 and then 3 or more for the rest of the day.  Just found out it is just me until 9:30 and from 9:30 to 11:30 there is just me and one back up who, while very knowledgeable, is not good at getting things done quickly … gunna be a long day!

No storms here .. beautiful day yesterday.  I hope everyone else was lucky also.

sjturner79 congrats on the new additions .. I did chuckle at “wasn’t intending to buy”  ;)  They are pretty cute!

Sam that little one is adorable!

Satay ah well, at least you have a spare “I told you so” for another day ;)

We have a bit of a mystery … KiKi, who was pretty close to being broken, was in the run just before bed time last night when she thought she saw something in there with her .. she clucked up a storm which, of course, got everyone else who was in the garden going as well.  Took quite a while to settle them down and even at bed time, on the roost, KiKi was still grumbling about something.  I pretty much stripped everything down I could in the coop and run and found nothing and no signs.  Come dark, they settled.

This morning I was up before 5am to frantic chickens .. KiKi and Crystal had not come down off the roost and the others, while down, would not go into the front part of the run, even when I put breakfast in there.

I stripped everything down yet again and once again, found nothing!  I didn’t move or change anything yesterday, there are no signs of any wildlife, including snakes and rodents and I have no idea what is going through their crazy little chicken heads … well, probably just KiKi’s crazy little chicken head + the power of suggestion ;)

I say KiKi was close to being broken because I had her locked out of the nest box for the majority of the weekend and she was pretty good by yesterday but this morning, when she eventually came down off the roost, she spotted the nest box.

I have also discovered that I can not put KiKi in the broody breaker .. I tried it yesterday and she freaked out; to the point that both hubby and I thought she was going to hurt herself.  She kept throwing herself at the wire and worked herself up so much she was seriously panting.  I had to get her out of there before she overheated!  I was in the shed getting a bath ready for her to cool her down and when I came out she was just a pile of feathers .. OMG! I thought she had died ... heart attack, heat stroke etc.  Anyways, turns out she had just hunkered down into the dirt and was cooling/calming herself down.

I very rarely question my decision to have chickens but today is one of those days .. up before 5am, psychotic overheated broody's, invisible threats ..........

:lau You sure have a flock of little divas :lau

Sam good to hear that you only experienced minor flooding .. yep, we also use the fact whether it is coming in the doors or not to scale the degree of flooding

Apparently KiKi’s invisible eggs did not get too cold, she is back on them

Also apparently, whatever had them freaked out was severe enough to keep them away from their breakfast until 09:30am. I was watching them and Cilla appears to have lost the drawing of feathers as she had to go first, closely followed by everyone else in single file with an appropriate delay

Lol satay yep, I sure do have a flock of little Divas/Princesses! I do not think they would last 10mins in the real world

Just looking at the footage of the tornado in Victoria and it got me wondering. I don't remember there ever being tornados in Australia when I was younger. Cyclones yes, but tornados were something they just had in America but they seem to be happening more and more frequently these days.

Have I just got a bad memory as a kid? Did we always get tornados?

According to BOM, they are not uncommon, probably don't see many in Vic though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your memory - I can't remember there being any tornados when I was younger either.

There just seem to be more and more up and down the south coast of NSW and Victoria.

Could just be that we are more aware of current events. I know I used to prefer homework to watching the nightly news , when I was younger. Could also be another symptom of global warming. Every 10 years or so Sydney seems to get hit by a freak weather system or storm cell. I've witnessed 2 of those events.

I have seen hundreds of water spouts. The one 18 mths ago in Nowra Kiama was a spout that hit and travelled over land It's also easier to report these things and media coverage quicker to respond than when we were kids

Silly me updated my phone now I can't upload photos!! My chicks are 2 weeks old and so far their feathering is not true to light Sussex, I wanted to get some opinions but I can't upload photos till I fix the glitch!!
Most are feathering so far all white, 2 are getting colour on the wings but only one with the black, the other has almost partridge colouring with the white.
the Orpington x's are going to be beautiful I really hope atleast one is a pullet!!
Already some comb difference, one I'm pretty sure is a boy, it's the only one with tail feathers which I thought was typical of girls to get tail feathers first?? Yet it has the biggest comb and thickest legs of the lot.

Got the tree in my backyard removed today, a huge Norfolk pine, got him to leave 2 branches for me to use as roosts, one was dead already the other I might have to leave sit for a couple months, now to figure out how to strip the bark.
